I've got a 1 gallon tank with a hood, light, filter, two bamboo stalks and some java moss. I would like to have it as a shrimp only tank but I don't know how many I could have in there. Ghost shrimp are the most common kind I have seen in my LFS, so how many of these guys would be alright?

Are there any particular things I should do to make this a good shrimp home?

Shrimp are extremely little bioload, so as long as you are not feeding them a lot you should be able to keep upwards of ten in there of the small shrimps like ghost, cherry, bumblebee, etc. There are a lot more attractive shrimp out there than ghost shrimp, but they certainly are the cheapest and most widely available. Still, I think it is worth it to find the more rare and beautiful shrimp, most of which are also good algae eaters (ghost shrimp are not). Just be aware that if you mix the various neocaridina sp. and caridina sp. shrimp (most shrimp fall into one of these two groups) you will probably have interbreeding and lose the cool colors and distinct species.

There isn't much floor space in a one gallon tank- and shrimp do seem to get annoiyed with each other. I would suggest about 5 for ghost shrimp and 2 (male/female) for cherry shrimp- which are my favorite shrimp at the moment. The cherry shrimp are extremely good beginner shrimp and will breed with no special treatment. Also, they will not eat their babies (so long as they are fed every so often) They are reletively cheep- but you might have to search for a shop that sells them; alot of times stores will not sell them in the cooler months of the year. Hope this helps. Oh and by the way, the cherry shrimp are bright red (incase you didn't already know!:hehe

If you want to watch the shrimp go abolutely crazy- drop in some live mosquito larva!

I lve in central AL. All I've seen for sale here are ghost shrimp for use as feeders or scavengers. Where can I find info on buying cherry shrimp?

You can ask at the lfs to see if they can order them, check out local fish club meetings and ask the members, or order them from the internet.
