Has anyone purchased any "livestock" over the internet? Its very tempting with the prices. I would really only want to purchase one of the "cleanup" crew packages that are typically sold. (different types of crabs and snails). Has anyone had success/failure?
Also, just to clarify (and this is the fresh water side of me coming out) I dont need any mechanical filtration in my tank? (again, have a 72gallon with about 30 lbs lives rock, just added 50lbs dry rock, 50 lbs substrate, which is slowly being turned over to new sand, two strong powerheads for movement and a Seaclone 100 protein skimmer). No power filter that hangs off the back is needed? or canister filter? Just want to be sure. The fish crap has to go some where. Guessing natures way is best - let the critters handle it?

I thought of buying from the Internet as well but decided not to because of the next day shipping charge. I think the place I was looking to buy from was a min. of $30 to buy and then something like $25 for shipping, maybe more. It seems like a good idea if you buy a lot of livestock, which I wasn't going to do. I'd like to hear other peoples experiences.

I think most give it a miss because of the overnight shipping.

| I have ordered fish off the internet before. All the fish made it but one. It is a good way to get access to a variety of fish species because not all pet stores carry many different types of fish. I think most have a policy were they will ship out new fish if your fish or dead on arrival. The only thing that is stopping me from ordering fish again is the price of shipping them. ETA: I have ordered plants on line as well and have never had a problem with them.

| Just thought I'd offer a recent bad experience I had trying to order livestock on line. Anybody ever deal with Extreme Corals? I've been watching their site for several months waiting for my system to mature and for that perfect coral to appear. Week before last I saw a very nice picture (they are a "what you see is what you get" site) of an acropora and decided to place an order. I placed the order using PayPal but by time I finished the form the order site had timed out. In affect, they had my money but the coral I had ordered had gone back up for sale. Not too big a deal. Sent an email to "customer support" and placed a couple of phone calls (five trys to get a response on the phone) and got things straightened out. Sent another email to "customer support" just for confirmation. Order was placed on a Friday, the coral was to ship out on Monday for pickup at my local UPS Tuesday morning. Tuesday morning comes with no UPS tracking number. Since I was going to have to get off work to pickup the coral, I was kinda in a bind. The coral should have been available for pickup around 9am. Problem was, Extreme doesn't open until 10am central, I'm in eastern, so I couldn't even check on the problem until 11am my time. So I sent "customer support" an email and started calling. Finally made phone contact and was told that my coral hadn't shipped because they thought I was going to add to my order. This is in direct contradiction to their own web instructions but what the heck. I was told that the coral would definitely ship Tuesday for pickup Wednesday. Come Wednesday morning, same scenario. Since I had been assured I would receive my coral Wednesday, I took the whole day off work so I could pickup and acclimate the coral asap. Now I'm sitting at home, waiting until 11am again to make contact. Again, coral didn't ship. "I don't know why it didn't ship", I was told by the owner, "I'll look into it and call you right back." 6 hours later, my day off blown hanging out waiting for the phone to ring, I called them back. Now I'm told that the coral wouldn't be shipped because it wasn't looking good, and that my account would be credited. I'm sorry, but I just don't buy the sudden shift in the story I was being told. So after 5 days of looking forward, 2 days of looking to receive and a day vacation lost, I did get my money back but didn't get what I had been promised. I didn't get the product that I had ordered, I placed some 25 phone calls from North Carolina to Texas and I never did receive any response to any of my 3 emails to "customer support" (or should I say "The black hole of customer support"). Since my incident I have spoken with a couple of people who've had similar dealings with these folks. Everything from half dead animals received to having to threaten them with calling the BBB and accusing them of fraud before they could get an email response/refund for product not sent. Maybe mine was just one in a million bad experience. Maybe the other folks I spoke with after the fact were just unlucky too. MAYBE YOU'D BE BETTER OFF SPENDING YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE.
So many species, so little money!
