| I have a goldfish pond and want to treat it for tapeworms. I have the medication (praziquantel 23mg) and need to know if I just drop it into the water or should I dissolve it in a seperate container and pour it into the pond? Knowing how my goldfish gobble up anything on the surface of the water, or anything that drops into the water, I'm afraid if I just put the medication in the pond, they'll eat it.

I am not familiar with the medication, but my instinct would be to dissolve it in a cup of pond water first and to pour it in away from the fish. If you think about it, any medication is basically a targeted form of poison...it is supposed to kill only what it is intended for (be it parasites, bacteria, or whatever) but it stands to reason that it can't be good in high concentrations for any living thing.

I would desolve it in a 5 gallon bucket. Thats what we do for any of our medications or chemicals we use in our ponds.
When the tough times are a coming.. Just keep swimming..... 10 gallon - 4 guppies, 3 Female bettas, 3 corys & 1 Algae eater.
5 gallon - 5 guppies, 2 baby aglae eaters 1 frog & 5 ghost shrimp. 5, 1 gallon tanks - 1 male betta per tank. 1 gallon - Strictly Turmpet snails (aprox. 30)

Thank you both. Yes, dissolving it does seem to be just common sense, doesn't it? I just wanted to get a little input from people who know what they're doing, like you folks, since I've never had to treat my fish for anything before. Just lucky so far, I guess!

I know this is probably a bit late, but yes, Prazi should be dissolved in pond water first. Prazi is also pretty gentle on the fish themselves, it targets almost exclusively parasites. Something to do with the coating that most of them have I believe. Are you sure you have tapeworms though? They're fairly rare in goldies and koi.
