Make sure you have good lighting also. You must have enough lighting also. My 29 gallon will not grow plants very well because lighting is not strong enough. My 10 gallon has more then 2 watts per gallon and will grow plants well. In this tank I do not use co2 or fertilizers. I only have plants that grow without these things. They do very well.

Because of cost I was planning on using gravel mixed with First Layer Laterite. Would that work OK for a starter planted tank?

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm not familiar with First Layer Laterite, but if is just laterite you can use an inch or so of it and then cover it with plain #2 gravel. If you are starting with a dry tank I would recommend that you se one of the substrates ade specifically for plants -- there are many really good ones out there.

I use topsoil in my planted tank. Your tank is looking really good David! My planted tank has never had a filter on it since I started it, not even a bubbler. No algae, and it's growing almost as fast as yours. I always wondered how the sword plants propagated. Beautiful!

The runner from the Amazon sword has three plantlets on it. The biggest one is at the top of the water, with roots dangling down. In a week or two I think the roots will reach the substrate, and then the plant will start pulling down. I'll try to get some pics later.

Enclosed is a current pic of the 20 gallon unfiltered planted tank. It's interesting to note the changes since the last photo, which was taken on 5/31. Still no filtration, just a small HOB filter to move some water. The Amazon swordplant runner is just about got roots down to the substrate, and the hygro is growing out of the top of the tank. Fish are all doing great -- 9 jumbo neons, 8 bleeding hearts, 3 sunburst wag platies, 4 schwartzi corys, 3 SAEs, 4 cacuotoides, 1 4" yoyo botia, and a few bamboo shrimps. 20% water change every 2 or 3 days.

It certainly is lush plant growth...looks like the fish barely have room to swim now. Are you going to prune it or just let it keep going?
