20 gallon - melon barb x 3
krib x 2

Terra cotta is definitely fine. Stay away from any metallic or red glazes, as these usually use different metals in the glazes to achieve the color, and some of them will leech into the water. If you use something that is "safe for human use", like bowls and stuff, it's fine, because it's been treated so that it doesn't leech into foods. But flower pots and the like aren't treated like that.
20 gallon long
Lionhead - Kiko
Calico Lionhead - Little Bean
29 gallon
Fantail - Oliver
Black Moor - Damian
Calico Ryukin - Serafina
2.5 gallon
male betta - Pirate
10 gallon planted

I have cichlids and I bought a small, plain terracotta pot at walmart for about 50 cents. Definitely rinse it off first before setting it in the tank to get rid of dust or anything else that might have settled on it. Some people soak the pots overnight before putting in the tank as well.

You should use only a red clay (terra cotta) pot. All you have to do is make sure the hole in the bottom is large enough for the female to get into the pot (just ream it out a bit if you need to). Then turn the pot upside down on the bottom of the tank, and I guarantee you 100% that is where they will spawn. One day you won't see the female at all, and the male will be guarding the pot. Then about a week later the female will emerge, leading a herd of babies around the tank. It's one of the best things about fishkeeping. Have fun.

It's really interesting how certain cichlids will invariably spawn on certain things. If you give them an overturned flower pot with the hole in the bottom big enough for the female, kribs will always spawn there. For angels, anything on an angle to the side of the tank. And yet, for all the fancy "discus cones" etc., when I was breeding discus they always spawned right on the side glass of the tank. Go figure.

David Lass (7/1/2008) And yet, for all the fancy "discus cones" etc., when I was breeding discus they always spawned right on the side glass of the tank. Go figure. Probably because they like flat, clean surfaces where they could pick off eggs infected by fungus.
