I think they will be fine if the hood is rated for that kind of wattage. The one I had said it couldn't take over 20w total (so I used two 10w bulbs).

| Sorry one more question, the general rule that is 4 watts per gallon or whatnot, how is that measured I bought an 11 watt fluorescent light that replaces a 40 watt incandescent bulb in terms of brightness... would this be 11 watts per 10 gallons, or 40 watts per 10 gallons. it doesn't seem as bright as 40 watts...
20 gallon - melon barb x 3
krib x 2
planted
20 gallon - pending stocking

| The 11 watt compact fluorescent is supposed to give as much light as the 40 watt incandescent but uses less energy

It's difficult to measure, and is further complicated by the small tank which skews the wpg rating (there is not just a certain wattage per gallon plants need, but a minimum total wattage as well). I would go halfsies and figure that with those bulbs it would be a medium light tank.

| I understand that a 11watt fluorescent bulb puts out 40watts of incandescent light bulb energy but does it count as 1.1 watts per gallon or 4 watts per gallon

It's not quite either...it's somewhere in between because fluorescent light is stronger watt per watt than incandescent. Watts per gallon is actually a lousy way to measure the amount of light reaching plants because of differences in light quality, but unless you are willing to go out and get a PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) meter, you are going to have to live with it and make some guesses. My guess (from my own experience with such a set up) is that it about equals medium light, which is usually considered about 2-3 watts per gallon.

Alright I think I will get two of those light-bulbs for a strong light.
