Today my friend and I started a 10 gallon freshwater community tank. We put in a Small Pleco and a Golden Wonder Killifish. They are already active and fun to watch. We are going to add in another Golden Wonder and some Tetras, but what amazes me is the Golden Wonder Killifish (Shamu) that we have right now. At our LFS we were looking at them and when the worker there scooped out the fish he had a little white dot on the top of his head (we didn't notice it while he was in his tank because they stay at the top of the tank and he had his head up). When we got back and put him in the tank with Butler, our Pleco, his dot on his head was now black! We observed him from above for a minute and his colour changed from black to white again, and back to black! I have looked at articles about them, but there was nothing about Shamu's strange trait. I was wondering if this was a normal thing, or if it was strange or rare.

I have no idea about the dot, but I wanted to warn you that the pleco probably has to go. Assuming this is a common pleco, it will grow to 18+ inches and should not be in anything under a 75g tank. Even if it is a dwarf pleco variety, it is probably going to get too large for the tank. About the only one I know of that could work would be a clown pleco, which only grow to 3 inches or so. There may be a handful of other very small plecos, but they are quite rare. I also wouldn't put a second golden wonder in this tank...they are rather aggressive towards their own kind (especially if they are two males) and in the small tank they may hurt each other. With the pleco gone though, the killie could share the tank with six of a small species of tetra (preferably not long finned because the killie will likely nip).

Don't worry it is some strange type of smaller pleco. It has some stripes on it along with spots. But if it ends up getting too big, my friend's dad has a very large tank that he would let us move it to. Oh and do you think that three weeks is enough to cycle a 10 gallon freshwater, because we are not going to add in anymore fish for like three weeks. We also to a rock and some live plants from his dad's 4 year old tank. So that will probably help too.

Three weeks may be long enough with the plants and rocks from the established tank, but it may not. The only way to know it is done is through ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate testing. Since you're cycling with fish, readings for ammonia and nitrite should be taken daily anyway.

My LFS does free water tests, so we are going to get some regularly, and one in three weeks, and if the all the water parameters are right, then we will get the fish that day.

You shouldn't rely on them if you're cycling with fish. It's too important that the tank be tested every day, or at least every other day so the fish are kept safe. How often can you really get down there to have the tests done? And do they give you the numbers, or just say "they're fine" or something like that?

I literally walk there. It is RIGHT next to my house. They are a good store that doesn't just try to make money. They are really helpful and nice. I think that they are reliable.

| I have two killifish in my tank that have the white spot on their heads. They have always had it and are healthy.
