| How do I reduce the pH of the water without using chemical products like pH Down? Bogwood, rocks, what other easy-to-do solutions are there? I want to keep other fish than livebearers like honey gouramis.

Besides bogwood/driftwood peat also does the trick. You can add it to a canister filter. I'm not sure what kind of filter you have and I'm not sure how you'd use peat with different filters. Can someone elaborate that for me

| I have a canister hang-on-the-back filter. What is peat? I hope it has instructions on how to dose the tank... otherwise I'll need the answer to how much peat should be added to lower the pH from about 7.6 to 6.8. Any other solutions to lowering pH?

| Um... Maraqua... ahaha thanks for the idea of peat. But still the unpredictable nature of the peat can kill the fish I might want to keep. I don't think I'll try peat. I've seen something that purifies the water completely of all the ions and neutralizes it. Does anyone know what pH the water is brought down to?

What are your readings from the tap (after letting the water sit for 24 hours) for pH, kH, and gH? And what are they for the tank? You can get your lfs to test them if you don't have the kits (the kits for kH and gH aren't usually worth owning for most aquarists).

| My tank has a pH of 7.8 but that's because of the salt. The tap water is 7.6 after the water has sit for 24 hrs, I already tried it. I'll let the lfs test it and post another reply as soon as I get it tested.

I don't think salt is supposed to be raising your pH.

Oh I have a brackish aquarium. Just to clear things up. Conditioning salt, more than just marine salt.
