I will be firing up a planted 10 gallon aquarium which will house several female bettas very soon, and I was wondering if any invertebrates can be kept with them? Thanks in advance.

| Snails and some shrimp. The snail may need algae wafer/chip supplement, given abuot 1/4th of the wafer every two days. Make sure the algae isn't eaten by the betta, I think it happens to pufferrocks. Shrimp: Any that are not below one inch in adult size. This excludes Red Cherry Shrimp. Amano, Bumblebee, Bamboo, Ghost, Blueberry, Green, and Tiger Shrimps would be a peaceful, subtle addition. May I know the hardness of your water? Your water has to be hard enough (around 6-10 dGH/108-179 ppm) to sustain any inverts. This way, the calcium ions will help the inverts build strong shells. Does your dechlor contain heavy metal neutralizers? The heavy metals (especially copper) interferes with the molting process and can prevent shrimp from growing, killing them. Hope this helps. Be sure to respond, we wouldn't want problems in the tank!

You wanted to know the hardness of my water. I won't lie to you, I really have no idea. This would be my first tank so I havn't tested out my water yet, but I'll definetly find out though. "Does your dechlor contain heavy metal neutralizers?" Unfortunetly, the answer to that would be yes. And copper is included.

We used to keep snails and danios with our betta. They were all happy. The betta really doesn't create enough mess on his own for the snail though. You would have to feed some veggie chips or lettuce/zucchini

SeaCadet (11/15/2008) Alrighty. Thanks for letting me know all this, its much appreciated (even though I generally like to do my own research). You wanted to know the hardness of my water. Unfortunetly, the answer to that would be yes. And copper is included. If you want your hardness tested, a LFS (Local Fish Store) will usually do it for free. I believe Petco and PetSmart will too. I have never bought a testing kit and I test my water once a week (this isn't needed), because I have a LFS within walking distance of my house and they know me so I go up there get my water tested, buy some fish/plants, and stare at the SW fish I can't have... FattFishy speaks the truth, you can't use any copper based conditioners, chemical changers, medications (or any ich medicines, even without copper), or pH up/down with inverts in your tank. But I do disagree with FattFishy on one thing, I would not put a Ghost Shrimp in with bettas. I had a >1" Ghost Shrimp in my tank that my young male betta ate while he was molting (RIP Scampi... ), and I don't want that to happen to you.

Hmm, it sounds like I probably shouldn't go with invertebrates with my bettas, at least for my first aquarium. Thanks everyone for the help!

| No no no.. I think you misunderstood me. First off, your tap water may contain heavy metals like copper, uranium (TINY amounts), or other various ones. But, your dechlor should be able to neutralize them and render them impossible to harm. That taken care of, shrimp really aren't a bad choice. Just offer many hiding spaces.
