Update

I UPDATED or Added a few more of my specimens. I feel kinda perplexed adding them here knowing this is the fish channel and i have the reptile channel as well, but it seems that at least some people enjoy it so I'm trying to post them on both. I'll try doing different ones on each site though for now so if you happen to go look it wont be repetitive.

Illinois Animal Act

I just wanted to let people see what is going on in Illinois. Although I know that this doesn't affect most the people on this forum except a couple of us but if this passes in Illinois what state will be next. Most people dwell on the reptile portion of this Act. It does include fish as well. It is very vague at times. When are dart frogs dangerous in captivity, which tarantula do they consider dangerous? It is worded that this is only a partial list, that if someone deems an animal dangerous they can enforce the law.

This is only an excerpt: but I will include the address so that you may read the whole act.

14. All venomous amphibians, including but not limited to all frogs and toads that are capable of inflicting
serious bodily harm to humans and animals (poison dart frogs, cane toads, marine toads, giant toads,
Colorado River toad);
15. All venomous fish, including but not limited to members of the Scorpanaeridae family
(Scorpion/Rock/Stone fish); Ostraciidae family (Box/Trunk fish); Tetraodontidae family (pufferfishes);
Holocentridae family (Squirrel fishes); Dasyatidae family (stingrays); Siganidae family (Rabbit fish);

Really dumb land lord closed my favorite pet store!

I know this really good pet store relatively close to me and it just closed down after being at this location for 30 years because the greedy land lord demanded more rent for the space but they could not pay it so they closed. Just as background more than half the whole strip mall is empty! Hopefully they will get a new location soon.

Hello.

I was dismayed when I sent a message about this via the form on the main page and wasn't even acknowledged. Mods, or whoever runs this site, this is a very serious issue that could have dire effects on the future of fishkeeping if it is not stopped.

There is a very large dam scheduled to be built over the Xingu river in Brazil. It is the third largest in the world.

It's construction has been delayed for years due to the extreme environmental impacts it will cause, but the questionable activities of certain branches of the Brazilian government have allowed this monstrosity past most political solutions.

It's called the Belo Monte dam. If it is constructed, many popular aquarium fish, including iconic species of catfish and cichlids, will forever lose a vast swath of critical habitat and spawning grounds. In addition, this dam will flood many hectares of rainforest, and submerge the homes of thousands of indigenous tribespeople that have lived there for centuries.

Brazil is building the dam because they are on the verge of an energy crisis. However, despite research proving that the dam will not fix the crisis and lose the majority of the energy that it will gather will be lost, and despite the availability of energy saving technology that would be less expensive to invest in, they insist on building it. I am merely a college student trying to get a degree and pay my way through school. I am not a world leader or political figure of any sort, and I imagine the rest of you aren't either. Unfortunately, that means that there isn't much we can do about this directly.

An organization called Amazonwatch has an online petition form that they are trying to get out to people to sign to try and stop this horrible dam from being built. I've signed it myself and spread it to three of my facebook accounts, so that I can make a difference, even if it is only a small one. If you could sign it too and spread it as far as you can, that would really help.

I also plan on spreading this to other fishkeeping sites, because I think that the tropical fish community has a unique angle on this issue that no other niche or community can lay claim to, and that may prove to be powerful.

I am also going to tip off my local newspapers to this, just in case it could help somehow. If any of those who read this post could think of a similar method of helping, it could very well go a longer way than you think and is worth pursuing.

I am not affiliated with amazonwatch or any other organization involved with this in any way. I'm just a passionatebiology studentwho feels repsponsible for making sure that the species I love so much at home have a home of their own for generations to come in the Xingu river. I know I'm not much on my own, but I feel that the best way I can help is to try and give this issue as much exposure and press as possible.

If there is a website manager or other such moderator watching this topic, please, please, please consider putting something about it on the front page, or motioning it to do so. The more people that know about this, the better, and if we can get the fishkeeping industry on this problem, we might stand a chance at stopping that dam from going in.

Amazon Frogbit!

Both of my tanks are now overrun with amazon frogbit and I would like to spread the love. haha. It's a great plant and grows really fast. It's a floater and even looks great in Iwagumi/scaped tanks. It's also good for fry tanks, I have some in my betta albimarginata tank with the babies too. I can ship through USPS and you will get 25+ plants for $5, not including whatever shipping ends up being (if there's interest in this then I'll ceck out prices, but it should be more than around $5). serpent star spawns

I have just witnessed a serpent star in my reef tank spawn. will it die?
It looked like sperm. clouded my tank some. It took about 5 minutes to complete. Just wondering if anybody else has had this happen. I have had this star for at least 10 years. I had a diadema urchin spawn like this in this same tank several years ago and a few days later it shed its spines and died.

Are you a "freshwater person" or a "saltwater person"?

We have betta babies!

Just was watching my tank and it looks like I either have Betta albimarginata babies or sparkling gourami babies. I'm voting for that bettas because they are mouthbrooders and I haven't noticed a bubble nest from the gouramis. The babies are probably a millimeter or less long so theres no way I'm getting any pics> i barely even realized they were there. I just happened to notice one and start watching it and then I saw more. Hopefully a couple will survive because I wasn't planning for this and I dont have any food for them. They're hiding in the water sprite as of now.

Do you feed live food?

Have you ever had a tank wipeout?

Yes, in fact we had, last February, about 350 tanks with in total between the 4 and 5,000 Discus. Somebody brought a virus (on purpose or not?) in our fish house. It started with one of the 11 set ups infected what in a few days went trough the whole fish house and infected all Discus. Now for us it's pretty easy to clear up Discus and put them back up for sale, but with the knowledge that those Discus still would be carriers of this virus and could infect our customers and friends tanks, there was for us only one way to prevent this. We euthanized our complete stock to prevent spreading this virus. We had to disinfect all our tanks etc and are still rebuilding our stock. All Discus are in stock again and healthy, as our customers expect from us.

The silver lining in this all is that I came in contact with people from the Univ. in Florida. In the many conversations and email exchanges I had with them I found out that they are close to identify after 30 years what the "Discus plague" really is. About this I will get back later to you.

I just bought a pair of Betta albimarginata. The deal of any wild betta I want for $8 still stood so I got a pair that would normally cost $50 for $16. I couldn't pass it up. They went in my 10 gallon south asian biotope. New Aquarium

Hello from Illinois!

Its been a few years since I have had an aquarium and I am getting back into it. I am looking to start a 55 gal. My questions are:

1) Are the pumps and filters that come with them good enough or should I go ahead and buy something better. I am going to use plastic plants. Are undergravel filters used any longer?

2) How long do you allow before you introduce fish into their new home?

Also I should add I am doing a freshwater set up..Maybe down the road Ill venture into Saltwater but dont want to jump in over my head.
