I'm returning to the hobby after a four-year hiatus. I have a 29-gallon bowfront, freshwater tropical setup with driftwood and live plants. Presently I have three guppies and six peppered corys.

My previous experience was with various small tanks to varying degrees of success. I kept a 55-gallon long cichlid tank with a common pleco and an Aquaedens rivulatus, but when moving cross-country for a job, I decided to give them better homes in my LFS donation tank, rather than risk losing them and the tank in a 1,600-mile trip.

I decided to start small this time around, since I needed to fill the big empty space in my old entertainment center when I upgraded from my 10-year-old, 200-pound television from college to a flatscreen HDTV. Once I get a great community tank going, I'd like to try another cichlid in a bigger aquarium.

I enjoy the magazine and the site. Thanks for reading!

HI I AM BACK AFTER A LONG WHILE !!

Just wanted to say a big Hello to every one on the boards, I used to be here alot at one time then i drifted away, but i am back here now hoping to carry on where i left off with all you lovely people, I down sized abit too since i was last here i have the following tanks and fish :-

20 Gal,

2 Bristle nose cat fish

4 Glow Lights,

6 Rummy Nose Tetras

4 Cherry Barbs

1 red finned Shark

12 gal tank,

2 Peppered Cory's

3 Harlequins

3 Lamp Eyes

Hope to get to know all of you real soon.

new here, not to fish

hey I'm glad to be here. I stumbled across this site and signed up for a newsletter, me being a big fish lover. I currently have a 20 gallon: http://www.fishchannel.com/blog/viewbio.aspx?apid=170195
and a oriental-themed 10 gallon with live bamboo and nothing in it yet. I will be getting betta imbellis. I've been into fishkeeping for the last 4 years. I started when I got a 10g aquarium and overstocked it with goldfish and a dojo loach... that didn't last for more than 3 months, and then I finally started learning, with platys. My fishkeeping has REALLY taken off this year and I'm really enjoying it. www.myfishtank.net has sure helped me be enthusiastic about my fish and their proper care. Recently my dad bought me a aquarium fish international magazine and so I signed up here

zo

Here is a pic of Red the Oscar

here is red the oscar!

this web site

help!!!!how do i find replies to my posts, how do i add pictures to a post, and how do i find my past posts. thanks, from overstocked

hello

just a new member saying hi. I have been thinking of starting a marine tank and this place has been very helpful in getting things planned out.

Currently I have a 55 gallon freshwater with three fully grown balasharks (balantiocheilus melanopterus), a spotted climbing perch, ctenopoma acutirostre), three green cory's, a bumblebee catfish and an unidentified pleco.

The sharks I have had for almost five years now, the spotted climbing perch for about six or seven years and one of the corys is between three or four years old. The pleco has got to be ancient since it was given to me by someone who didn't want their tank anymore, and I got that tank in high school about 10 years ago.

And to think I started out as a kid who could barely keep fish alive for a week.

I am currently working on adding live plants to the 55 gallon. After a rough start it is starting to take a turn for the best now with the plans living, growing and thriving after I figured out the bulbs were too old **credit to this forum for that**

And I can't forget the little one-gallon betta tank with the mighty Helios, who happens to look like a solar eclipse.

Was on here years ago....

Hi: I was on this website back in 2000 when I got my first aquarium. It was then called aquariumfish.com. I entered aquariumfish.com and fishchannel.com came up. I last checked in 2006 and my user name and password was still good. I checked tonight 2010, and it is still good. I was so pleased. I kept an aquarium for several years successfully due to the help and info received on this website. I recently set up a 10 gallon aquarium after several years. I would love to have a larger one but no longer able to take care of a larger one. I have a question but will ask in the appropriate place.

Dinah

WHO ARE ALL YOU PEOPLE?!

Somehow lots of our well know members are gone and we have lots of people who just kinda popped up outta nowhere lol.

if you all could post in this topic with the following info that would be cool:

what size tank(s) youve got
what fish you have
when you joined

i just wanna get to know everyone better because ive been seeing so many unfamiliar names lately... and fewer names that I recognize.

Greetings

Joined a couple weeks ago. Then I got a freshwater puffer fish and it was apparently sick so all of the fish I had died. That was about 3 years ago. For the past year and a half I have kept a crawdad who died about 2 months ago. Now I am getting back into fish keeping, because I have an AP Chemistry project that I am doing that deals with how water plants affect the PH balance and how the PH affects fish. After the project I am going to keep the fish. Coming this fall I am moving from Ohio to California so that I can study Marine Biology. So I'm pretty interested in any type of marine animal. Having good experience with FW and still running it today. In fact its quite self contained with live plants, a beautiful Angel and barbs. (12 gallon)

Okay the SW setup:

37 gallons

44 pounds of live rock (internet and local pet store purchased)

30 pounds live substrate (Nature's Ocean)

eheim ecco 2232 filter

Hydor inline heater (great product)

Hydor Koralia 2

Seaclone protein skimmer (will be replacing with AquaC HOB w/maxi-jet 1200)

Standard light (still dunno what to buy yet)

Tank cycled in 14 days.

Added:

Coral:

3 little Bullseye Mushrooms

1 Taro Tree Coral

Stock:

1 Yellowtail Damsel

1 Blue Damsel

1 Three Spot damsel

1 Feather Duster (never comes out )

Water Levels are great with zero nitrate, nitrite, ammonia. Salinity 1.022

I have not done any water changes.

Make note: Change the protein skimmer asap. The Seaclone created too many micro bubbles even after adjusting the nozzle. It actually only works best with the nozzle completely off..

So, I will be buying additional 'newbie' corals soon. I also want to add two clowns.

I found out about this site from all the advertisement I saw within Marine Fish & Reef magazine.

I read two books;

Animal Planets, Saltwater Aquariums

101 Saltwater fish

Tank setup:

Some of the 'live' rock was purchased from Dr Fosters (22 pounds) 'premium' Fiji rock. My tank was new, and I placed that directly in the tank without any fish/coral. Then went to the LPS and picked up cured live rock that was in tanks with fish. My ammonia spiked to 10.0 within the first week. Second week the nitrite jumped off the charts as well. By the end of the second week, everything zero'd out. I think I did a good job cycling. Having local rock (costly) and the 22 pounds from Dr Fosters (CHEAP!) was a win win for me. Its sped up the cycle.

Again, I am a newbie, just read the books and input from the internet. My next purchase will be the Aquac Remora HOB skimmer. Everyone seems to state that its the best out there. I have also learned to buy it with the maxi-jet 1200 not the Rio+ 800. We'll see. Its quite confusing when you look into this product, since there are options (powerheads, drain fittings, covers..). I will not be running a sump or wet/dry. I cannot seem to figure out why no one came up with a good protein skimmer that doesnt need that powerhead directly in the tank. Its sooo ugly.

I have no cleaners yet. 1 Dunno which to buy (can I get a crab?) Also, I dont think I have enough 'food' yet??

Lighting. OMG there is too many options and brands. I have a the crappy stock setup for now. I know I need to replace it. I also have a canopy. I want something that has LED and white/blue light? (Help me out people!)

Look at my picture of my tank and let me know if I should get a lower intake tube. Seems like the 'green' one I have doesn't get to the bottom of the tank.

Any other pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading my thread.

Hello!

Hi! I am new here and would like to introduce myself. I have been keeping fish since i was about 13. I am no expert by any means, i just enjoy it as a hobby. The tanks help me to relax.

It was really awesome to find a network just for that! I love the fishchannel!

New Member Hello to everyone

Hi I'm Pat and I am in love with my fish. My children are all grown and have left the nest. My Discus fish all have their own names. They have the most unique personalities!

I can not find any good local fish stores, I have tried several online vendors and I have had mixed results. Like everyone, I know Discus fish are more delicate than most freshwater fish. I have been buying from Somethingsphishy online for close to 5 years. I have heard others absolutely trash this company. You know, everyone is entitled to their opinion. My experience has been extremely positive. I did my research, asked a lot of questions and found the staff at somethingsphishy.com to answer all questions and concerns quickly and thoroughly. I have spent thousands of dollars with them and have fish that are healthy and I even have a pair of Discus that paired off several years ago. They lay eggs often, some have survived and are now adults. Most of the time the other fish eat the eggs before I see them.

I have some of the most beautiful fish in my home. I have a redtail catfish that I bought from them around a year ago, man, that fish is huge now. It gets along great with my discus and a variety of rams and plecos. My fav is my watermelon pleco, he is 4 yrs. old and yes, he came from my fav. vendor, somethingsphishy.

Can anyone recommend a good site for plants?

Hope to post pictures of my little darlings soon.

Pat4fish

Hey Everybody

Hello everyone. My name is Brandon. I am a marine biology graduate from Texas A&M University Galveston. I have been keeping a saltwater aquarium for several years, I am a board member on my local aquarium forums, and I have also created my own blog (http://blog.aquanerd.com).

i have a 180 gallon Aquarium Obsessed custom aquarium that is SPS dominated, but I am in the planning stages of a new tank build to go along with a house build. So, we'll see how that goes.

I'm glad to find yet another aquarium website to join...this makes like 15 .

***moderators, if I'm not allowed to post links to my blog, please remove them, thanks***

Advice for me?

I have a 20 Gallon Long tank and a 10 Gallon

In my 20 Gallon, i have 2 Gouramis (i believe a Pearl Gourami and a Dwarf Gourami, but im not 100% sure) and i also have an Archer fish with them.

In my 10 Gallon i have 9 Zebra Danios and an African Dwarf Frog.

In both tanks i have heaters, filters and some sort of airation. I feed both tanks with Tetramins Tropical Flakes, and the fish seem to eat it.

Is there anything i need to change with my tanks? Can i add fish to my 20 Gallon? You will become a bit familiar with North Vancouver soon as a few of the Winter Olympics (Feb 2010) will be hosted here on the North Shore.

I've been "into" aquariums a few times in my life. Like many, I started out with the small tank (5 gallons) and spent my way through many tanks over the years. I've owned guppies to elephant noses, to Geophagus Jurapari's, from eels to salamanders. At one time I bred Gold Severums, but this was some time back.

In my not to distant past, I had larger aquariums again with larger fish, and usually a well planted tank, but certainly not as dramatic as some planted tanks that can be found today. I must confess the first thing coming as a surprise as I currently review the literature on aquarium issues and maintenance, is the use of CO2 for plants - Uh! who would have thought.

This time, I'm not going to get the "giant" tank, I think something around a 50 gallon - 36 by 18 by 18. I prefer the depth of this tank to the narrower 55 gallon tank; I think it will give me more depth for an allusion of a "deeper" plant growth.

I am also thinking the tank will be mostly a plant tank with fish to enhance the plants, I'm thinking a Tetra tank - our water here in North Vancouver is acidic, perhaps too much, but at least I have the acid base, I just have to tone it down a bit. I'm also toying with adding a few Cory's and maybe some algae eating fish, haven't made up my mind on this.

I am planing on a canister filter, some I see suggest two, one at each end of the tank, and an undergravel filter. Dark gravel to enhance the colours of the Tetras, etc.

This will be a bedroom tank so I can lay in bed, read, listen to music and watch the fish, so a "quiet" tank will be important to me. I also see the recommendation to use two heaters instead of one, this is new to me but it makes sense.

If I don't do a specific Tetra tank, the only other idea I might go for is something when I first entered the hobby in around ...ah ....ummm ....errrr ... okay 1960. A gentleman took me to his home and showed me his tank, which was probably around 60 gallons (at my age back then 60 gallons looked like a 150 gallon tank) and he only had Neon Tetras and Tiger Barbs. Since both these fish schooled, the patterns they made, and the combination of their colours made for a beautiful tank. Well enough of my babbling, I will ask more specific questions in other areas here.

I would love to see some pics of any Characin tanks, if you so have, and I'm definitely open to advise and recommendations.

hey all you fish freaks

hi there. im Andrew. i have been a fish keeper since i was 4. im nice and love fish and music. so i hope to meet some new people and to get help with my tank every now and then.

so yeah, im not real good at introductions. so yeah, uh bye

New to fishchannel and to fish keeping

Hello,

My name is Constantin, I live in NYC and about 2 months ago my wife and I started a 55 gallon goldfish tank, out of the blue I might add. I had started out with a 10 gallon fresh communtiy tank, as most children. Since then my facination with fish has grown so much I am considering changing my major in college to be a Marine Biologist. I currently have gotten into saltwater tanks about a year and half ago. I have 4 tanks at my house and 3 betta bowls. Two of my tanks have a frog and turtle in it. I have a 10 gallon saltwater tank. With Clownfish, Fire fish, Anemone, Anemone crab, 2 hermits. I have plenty of filtration in my tank to keep a 30 gallon going, and it gets changed on a regular basis. I also have a 65 gallon custom built tall/wide tank. It used to be an African Cichlid Tank, but now is being converted into a Discus Tank with Angel fish and Tetras. I love fish and hate to eat them. I DONT EAT FISH.

I am in college and work full time as well.

Samantha

Hello fishlovers

Hello all fishlovers!
