MOA's: Advanced Mathematics for Aquarists

Hello All,

My name is MOA and I am an advanced mathematics and physical science major from southern Idaho. A few years ago I undertook a monumental task--rectifying the errors of many of the common rules on stocking a freshwater aquarium. Surprisingly, I was able to develop a set of equations that proved 100% accurate in laboratory tests. The advantage of using these formulas is that you can predict bioload before the aquarium system is even bought! Unfortunately, this set of equations has only limited field testing and so it should only be considered a theory at this point. Also, it is amazingly complex and therefore not very user-friendly.

That being said, I plan on posting bits and pieces of it over the next couple of weeks so that the useful information of this study will be available to the general freshwater community. Please note that I am not saying that this theory is absolute. In fact, I am hoping for some feedback from whomever reads this so that I can perfect it. I thoroughly welcome conflicting viewpoints so long as you can provide specific examples.

Hi! I got so excited about talking to other fish heads that I didn't even bother saying hi, first. I have two 29 gallon planted tanks(all the plants I got from Petco, so I'm not exactly an expert on the planted tank)with 2 paleatus cories, 1 aenus cory, 1 schartzmans cory(I think), 3 neon tetras, 6 Harlequin Rasboras, 4 adult neon swordtails(and various fry), 1 gold Gourami, 3 otocinclus spp., and too many ghost shrimp to find, and count in one tank. The other has 1 Gold Gourami(I had to separate the two I bought), 4 black neon tetras, 6 Starfire red Glofish, 3 otocinclus spp., a few ghost shrimp(transferred from the other 29), 4 adult cherry barbs, barbus titteya, and about 10 cherry barb fry. I've been in the hobby since I was a little boy, and am now coming back into it after a few years, and being on the ignorant end of the saltwater hobby.

hi, well im not a newbie to fishkeeping really...i had tanks when i was a teen and have been back in fish and tanks for a year now.. right now i have freshwater community fish... i dabbled in saltwater but gave it up after my lawnmower rock blenny killed my fish.... so now i have a 10 gal community which im in the begining stages of having a planted tank.... also have a 29 gal community tank.... a 5 gal betta tank and another betta tank that is a 10 gal....looking forward to any and all wisdom. my future goal is to have an angel tank.....soon....hopefully lol

Hi I am new. I love Dawarf Puffer fish!! They are so smart, cute, friendly, and the list could go on. I like discussing fish and tank set ups.

Other than fish I also like dogs and horses. I foster horses that have been abused and neglected and train them.

I have a puffer fish, a mollie, a placosamas, and 3 platys in my tanks. Earlier today one of my platys had 12 babys. They are sooo cute.

If anyone wants to chat I would love to.

I'm new here, but not to fish keeping. I have been keeping fish pets for years. (more than I care to mention). I have now 1 - 10 gallon, 2 - 29's, a 55, and am working on my 130. 130 should be up and running in a couple weeks.

My fish: breeding colony of Purple Moscow Guppies, 4 Shubunkins, 1 male Betta, 1 Common Pleco, 2 Bristle Nose Pleco's, 4 Black Neons, a large school of Gambusia Holbrooki, AKA Mosquito Fish, a trio of Kenyii Cichlids, a scholl of Barbs (7 Tiger, & 4 Odessa), and last but not least, a Bumble Bee Catfish.

I look forward to getting to know you guys (and gals), I am also an avid wood worker, and I love doing DIY's. Let's see if we can get Admin to add a DIY section. I would love to share mine. I have several done, and am working on several now. If anyone has one they would like to see, let me know, we maybe can figure a way to build it.

Sick Peacock Eel

I was a member some years ago and used the name catfish. Lots of things have changed since then but now my daughter has two Peacock Eels which she rescued from a Wal Mart which was closing down it's fish dept.

While we bought several fish. (As much as the money we had) the only two surviving, after almost a year, are two Peacock Eels. She had a hellish time because she had to buy a new tank when she bought the fish. It was either try to save them or know they were ALL dead.

She went through new tank syndrome and we thought she'd never get the Amonia down no matter how hard she tried. We were running to the pet store weekly or even more frequently. For some time now these two seemed fine. Now one has a big belly and is lethargic.

Can anyone help? I have never dealt with scaleless fish.

Didn't know where best to put this. I know I haven't been around here for awhile, a month and a half or something like that. I was really busy with school and then work, but I'm back now! Hope everything's going well for everyone!
I'll post pics and updates of the fishes and the babies, which are growing quickly. Damian's eye is swelling again, but the planted tank is looking lovely. Pictures to come!

Hi! My name's Jessie. I'm fourteen and I'm from the SF Bay Area in sunny California. I recently got back into keeping an aquarium ( I had one when when I was in, like, third grade but... Well, let's save that for another day... ) after this really weird dream. Anyways, I cleaned out the tank and, weeks later, I had my little babies. It's a six gallon tank that my father got me in a sort of impulse "SHE NEEDS IT" buy. (I'm kind of a bit of a spoiled brat because that's how I was treated growing up ) My tank houses six male guppies, two bloodfin tetras, and a pleco that, for some reason, acts somewhat like my sister's pet cat who we named him after. (It's hard to explain. No, he doesn't beg for cream or table scraps like the cat, but there's just something about him) I the somewhat short time that I've kept them, I've grown rather attatched to my babies and will probably run myself broke for them eventually. It doesn't matter though, because I love them! (I've practically replaced all of my human friends, all of which rather concerned, with this little obsession of mine! )

That's all, really. I'm just excited to be here! I hope I can add something interesting to this already awesome forum!

Greetings everyone, upon receiving a small collection of Freshwater and Marine Aquarium back issues I discovered this site. Reason for joining the forums includes learning what ever the community has to offer and to share what little that I do understand. Being a quasi-lifetime aquarium hobbyist
(13/18 years) there is still an infinity worth of information to be had just over this subject (makes it hard to corner the market), I still consider myself a novice. The family owns a 473 L stocked with over-grown specimens (including a vegetarian Tiger Shovel-Nose catfish, 61cm) * i did not sanction to have such a large fish being tortured in such a way*. Personally i own a 75 L with a female and male Xenopus laevis and a 132 L community tank that include a favorite of mine, Chromobotia macracanthus, as well as others. I have future hopes of a planted species tank for breeding and observing, but at the moment my hands and feet are tied with spawning Xenopus laevis . My name is Jon Smith, and I'm looking forward.

I stumbled upon this forum while looking for an answer as to why my coral sand is covered in algae.. And being an aquajunkie of note, it seemed like a good place to stay and meet like-minded people

Let's see, I'm 27, from Cape Town (South Africa) and I have two tanks: 1 x 100L angel tank and 1x 100L catfish tank. Our special catfish is a 2-spot and she's enormous.

Hi everybody, I'm Eric. I've been keeping fish for about 8 months and I love the hobby. I've been raising different types of Mollies and succefully breeding them in a 55 gallon aquarium. I have a number of Lyre-Tails Mollies, Sailfin Mollies, Balloon Mollies, 1 Sailfin Balloon Molly, 1 Lyre Tail Balloon Molly. In the tank with the Mollies I have 4 Platies, 7 Fancy Guppies, 1 Plecostumas, and 1 Albino Freshwater Snail. Also I have a 20 gallon tank with a beautiful yellow African Peacock Cichlid and a smaller dark blue African Peacock Cichlid. I also have two 10 gallon aquariums with a Bettas, the two having a pair, one male one female, also one of the two has a beautiful spotted pleco swimming around with the Bettas. In a 5.5 gallon tank I the beginnings of a natural aquarium with plants and a male Betta. In a 10 gallon aquarium I have a medium and a small Parrotfish Cichlid and in another 10 gallon I have two Kribensis Cichlid. In my last 10 gallon aquarium I keep the newest and most recent of my babies from the first 55 gallon (the livebearer tank). Last but not not each I have another 55 gallon aquarium with a variety of Tetras including 6 Neon Tetras, 6 Black Phantom Tetras, 6 Emperor Tetras, 6 Red Phantom (Swegles) Tetras, 3 Pristella Tetras, 3 Yellow Pristella Tetras, 1 Black Shark, 1 Plecostumas, 2 Ottocinculos, 1 Bubblebee Gobbie and a pair of purple Bettas (1 male and 1 female).
All together I have 9 tanks and I am a busy, busy guy keeping up with all these fish but I wouldn't trade it for the world.
I love my fish and I can't wait to have more. I would love to get my natural aquarium into a 55 gallon. I have had the best time with my two 55 gallon aquariums. There are so many options to go with in such a nice space. If I could have a bigger tank I would love it but there not cheap. LOL.

I love being an aquarist. It's such a fun hobby and I reccommend it to anyone.

I have a 47 gal. bow front tank. In it I have two Cichlids. I'm not sure if they are African or South American. I also have one Arrawanna. (sp?). I use a canister filter made for 100 gal. tank. I hope to upgrade in about a year and a half to a larger tank. As I've learned that Arawannas can become large.

I have learned so much already and have only been here a few days. I hope to learn a lot more. I'm glad this site is here and I'm glad I've come across it.

My name is Chelsea. I just found this website about a week ago, although I had unknowingly "Googled" these articles a couple of times. I'm new to fish keeping [I've been keeping fish for 2 1/2 months and am only 17 years old], and have found the most helpful articles so far on this site. I just subscribed to AFI a day ago and can't wait to receive it.
I just wanted to introduce myself among the other members because I often have unanswered questions. I'm thrilled that I may have found people to answer them. Let's face it, Petco/Petland/Petsmart is rather unreliable. I have bought 4 fish [Red Capped Oranda named Kiwi, Fantail named Mango, and 2 bettas named Leonardo and Raphael] and an African Dwarf Frog [Toad] from these general stores. Raphael is the only surviver. I interrogated the Pet___ fish care "specialists" about possible answers and I've only received shrugs.
Again, I just wanted to introduce myself and hope that the answers I receive on this site will be more reliable than "shrug."

Oh, by the way, I currently have another Red Capped Oranda named Donatello in a 10 gallon planted tank and Raphael was just moved from a cozy, but small none-the-less, jar-type-thing to a roomy planted 2 1/2 gallon tank yesterday.

They're both still alive, and I'm proud of that fact.

My name is Gina and I'm from Kansas. I am a first time fish owner, but long time animal lover. I just got a male Betta on Monday (I got him from Walmart) and I am loving to just watch him swim around and be all silly. (when there is a glare on the side of the tank he flares at his reflection and charges at it a lot. he also loves to swim around and hide in the fake plant that I have for him).

I have been browsing some of the topics and everyone here seems so nice and willing to help answer questions and such. I look forward to talking with you all and learning a lot about keeping fish.

My wife and I are new to the aquarist hobby. At first, our idea was to get a tank and some nice fish for a sort of decorative addition to our home, but upon doing so, have learned there is a great deal more to consider. Rather than the responsibilities turning me off of the hobby, I've found myself even more enthused! I love the personalities that go with fish, and how research (something I love) is something that is never-ending, as there's always more to learn.

We purchased a 90 gallon tank with stand and filters from one of my wife's co-workers. We finally set it up and got some fish in there, and we're loving it.

I hope to learn a great deal from this site and forum, and glad to have found such a great new hobby.

I just wanted to say hi and my name is Jen! I'm 22, from PA, and I love fish, especially goldfish. I have a 55 gal tank, a 20, a 10, a 5, and a 2.5 gal. I only have my 10 and 2.5 set up as of now but am working on my other tanks. I have a common goldfish named Monet and a Betta named Mufasa. All of my tropicals from my 55 gal passed away due to a fungus from a sick Dalmation Molly that I had recently brought home, so I am starting from scratch with my 55 gal. I'm planning to move Monet into my 20 gal and put away my 10 gal.

Hello everyone, my name is Daniel, I am twenty years old and I'm from North Carolina. I'm relatively new to aquarium keeping, although I'm really enjoying it a lot. I have had my current ten-gallon setup for around 3 1/2 almost 4 months now, and it's doing great. It usually runs with a pH of 7.4 to 7.6 and has low ammonia levels, although I'm looking to get new test kits soon for measuring Nitrite and Nitrates. My tank is planted, and I love having a live aquarium, it simply adds to the beauty of a regular aquarium. Currently I own an African Cichlid, Cory Catfish, Fantail Guppy, and a Pleco. i hav 2 fish tanks a 20 long and a 75, the 20 includes: 3 zebra danios, 4 platies, 3 swordtails, 2 black mollies, 2 guppies, and the good pleco bob. they 75 has: 4 silver dollars, 5 australian rainbowfish, 4 giant danios, 2 bala sharks, and another pleco 'junior', here are some pics. oh and i live in northern illinois. Here's the 20 and then the 75.

Hello, I'm new to the hobby, but not really new to fish. I've been fascinated with aquatic and marine life (sharks in particular) for some twenty years.

I only have a male betta (Betta splendens) in a small tank, though I'd like to move him to a larger one with some live plants and maybe some other fish.
