Hi wanted to introduce my self here.

My youngest son and I have gotten the fish bug. He has a 20 gallon with Guppies and I have a divided 10 with two bettas. We both enjoy watching the fish and planning out the next tank.

I have had fish over the years a few times but I didn't know enough about them to keep them going for more then a few months. Now we have been researching them and we both have a pretty good understanding on how the system works at least in theory.

We are having a problem with his 20 gallon. The cycle has stopped and the ammonia has gotten pretty high. We lost most of his guppies but I have been doing water changes to keep it down until the cycle starts back up. Even tried Terra safe start but still no luck. Just going to give it some more time and keep changing water.

Hoping to learn a lot more here and get advice to keep us on the right path.

Hi Everyone,

After many interveneing work years have finally taken the plunge and have gotten back into trying my hand at fish keeping again.

After a months intensive research, reading and a lot of patient have finally gotten two freshwater tanks set up, a 10 gal and a 37 gal. This time, I'm using live plants and Flourite and Flora-Max substrate.

To start the cycling have a betta in each one presently. The water is crystal clear in each and ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are marginal.

Anyway, I do have a few questions to ask, but will keep this one short for now. But, from cruising this forum can already see there are many caring and nice folks here. I am honored to be a member of your group.

Hi everybody. I just joined FishChannel forums! I have been on fishchannel for what, four to five months with my guppies, Pacific and Zoomer, new cory cat named Duster, and memory page for my first and special betta who died in July, Tangi Babe. He was my baby, very sweet, and he was the color of a tangerine orange. So I dubbed him Tangi instead of Tangy. (Tang-ee)

I am Mae, I live in Denver, I am new to this whole fish thing-- my parents went out of town so I took it upon myself to take over my moms tank and give it a makeover, and now her favorite fish is having a near death experience. Waaaaaaa.

Ok, wll hi all my name is Megan and I'm 14, I have had fish before but they had all passed away leaving only one behind. The one left behind was a type of goldfish called a Comet. So i decided i would bye three new fish to make my tank in my room look fuller. I brought two Comet's and one Black Moore. I had only had them for about a week and when i woke up i found that the Black Moore was missing. I checked everywhere and know were to be seen was the Black Moore, plus i have a lid on my tank. I looked in and out the tank and was not to be seen. My filter is not the one that sucks this up so it no way could of been sucked up there, i lookeD under ornaments and in the tank but still no BM. The other fish look no bigger so i don't know if one might of eaten it, but I'm just so puzzled, any ideas?

It's been many years since I've had an aquarium, but after some serious health issues I've found myself unable to care for most types of pets. So I set up a small aquarium and let a Petsmart betta pick me out and it's been love ever since. My little fish is not very fancy but he has tons of personality. I've loved watching him explore every inch of his 8 gallon ocean after living in a tiny cup for so long. He quickly discovered how to enjoy swimming around and through all the plants and decorations. He never quite figured out the "betta hammock" leaf however, choosing to use it instead for his bubble nest. I finally mounted it upside-down so it would hold his bubbles better. He has even taught me how to play hide and seek with him. I wish everyone who has a betta in a tiny bowl could know how much fun it is to watch them enjoy a bigger aquarium.

I recently acquired a 75 gallon tank and started it up pretty much midnight of December 1, 2012. If I could do it again I would do fishless but I did fish-in cycling.

Here is my data:

I have been keeping track of my levels and cycling. I am on a nitrite AND nitrate spike right now I think, and because I do have fish I did a water change today. Everybody looks happy, no red gills or weird behavior, and I think I even have some pregnant danios. We'll see.

The dates of Dec 8 - 10 I may have not let the water sit in the test tubes long enough to get a correct reading so I may have started cycling a bit sooner. Now I let them sit a good 5-10 minutes before a reading.

I run two C-220 canister filters from Marineland, and bubble wands all across the back of the tank (48" long tank) for aeration. The return on my filters spits out bubbles it takes in from the bubble wands too so the tank is getting a lot of oxygenation but only a very mild turbulence on the surface.

If anyone has some advice or spots something out of the ordinary, let me know. I also feed Omega One freshwater flakes (41% crude protein).

Hi everyone, I am so glad I found this community. After looking through your setups I have a lot to aspire to and some creative direction. I am currently completely new to the hobby having kept only a betta in a bowl for the last four months and recently starting up a very small freshwater tank 3 weeks ago, I'm not sure of liter/gallon conversions but it is an 11 liter tank so I think that is roughly 3 gallons. I will post further about my problems in other topics. I hope to learn and contribute what I can

hi i'm ralph. im new to the hobby. I have a 100gal fish pond(wide, not deep) with 1 redtail shark, 2 telescope goldfish, 1 black moor goldfish, 7 fantail goldfish, 1 carp, 3 marigold swordtail, 1 columbian shark, 3 black sailfin molly, 1 platinum lyretail molly and 6 mosquito fish. by the way, the two sharks get along pretty well. the pond also has lots of places for the two sharks to call it as their territory.

im not quite sure if these fishes are compatible with each other so im open to your criticism and im also here to hear your advices.

Hi I'm chuck. I have a 50 gal. cichlid tank and a 28 gal. platy and guppy tank.
I also got bored over the summer and dug out a 500 gal. koi pond. Found a home for the cichlid that I have left and am gonna transform that tank into a live plant with driftwood and stone aqua space. Looking to stock it with colorful and more friendly fish. Cichlids are neat and all but a little bit too aggressive for my taste.

I'm hear to get advise and constructive criticism. I hope to offer help when I can.

I've found i've been surprisingly good with fish, and i have completely filled any available space without crowding out anything else with three tanks spaced at different places....

Tank 1: Planted with crypto wendii, Jack the spadetail betta, mossball (4 gal)

Tank 2: Planted with crypto wendii and an anubis plant, 3 julii cory cats and 1 double tail betta with mossball and stacked stone 'cave'

Tank 3: 2 days into fishless cycle using bloodworms, will be planted, with a slate or stacked stone 'cave'. Species specific Harlequin Rasboras. maybe a couple red cardinal shrimp from the same place as the rasboras if they won't die due to temps the current from my penguin 100 filter, due to the fact if i put cories in it'd be too crowded.

I've had fish tanks for 3 years now. I started out with a 20 gallon tank with about 17 different little fish and now I have a 55 gallon tank with a year old Red Tail Catfish (Katty), year old Tiger Oscar (Buddy), and a year old Iridescent Shark (Spazy) along with a Pleco and I love them to death.

As of right now I'm battling a horrible case of Ich from some lack of water changes that has lead to Buddy getting HITH unfortunately. But I am working on fixing it.

I also have a 20 gallon tank with about 20 or 30 goldfish I have been keeping as a treat for Katty and Buddy about once or twice a week. I have stopped feeding them the goldfish though until my big tank is back to healthy levels.

Hi ya'll,

I joined fishchannel this past July. It has been fun. I love raising livebearers (thus the name and I started my first planted tank on 3-15-2012. Did lots of research on planted tanks and it really paid off in a big way. My tank is called "planted livebearer". I posted it on my page and it got some awards. I was so surprised and never had a clue that would happen.

I worked with aquariums for 15 years and had to take time off to take care of children. I also worked on the compuserve fish forum way back in the days. We had a good time, especially saturday nights!

Greetings all!

I was looking for a good fish forum and think i found it here.

17 years ago, Hurricane Opal took out my 75 gallon reef tank. I didn't have the heart to set it up again.

Now, the urge is on me again. Just started a 29 gallon freshwater and cyling it with two Platys, two pieces of driftwood, a couple of Anubius(sp?) and 5 strands of Anachris. One thing is for sure, things have changed a lot!

I am a youth minister from Southern IL that just moved here from St. Louis. My family and I moved into our first house and being as we live in a town of less than 2000 people I started to look for a hobby. I took up fish keeping through a couple Craigslist purchases. Now I have 2 tanks. A 125 and a 30 gallon. I'm still new to the hobby but already addicted and reading everything I can get my hands on. I still haven't figured out a direction to go with on my big tank and right now that's what I'm focused on most. It's basically a hodgepodge right now and I'm wanting to reign that in a little bit. Anyways, looking forward to learning more from people who have been around in the hobby.

hello to everyone!! i'm from west haven ct.i am retired and 63yrs old,have been keeping fish for 50+yrs.right now i have a 55gal planted tank that is WAY "OVERSTOCKED" by all practical fish keeping methods;cept for mine!!! please do not think i am trying to start trouble or an argument,as i said above i've been doing this for over 50yrs and it works for me.the tank is filtered by 2 marineland c-220 cannisters and i do 25% water changes every week without fail.i am waiting for my sister to bring me a program so i can post photos,right now they are too big and they are not being accepted. at the same time as the photos are posted i will put a list of the fish in the 55,and you will see why i use "OVERSTOCKED" as a tagline.i allso have a 20gal in my 7yr old son's room with a "BLUE LOBSTER",guppies and some neons,i will post some photos of that one too.i had 2 other tanks set up but my sister-in-law is moving in so they had to come down and are now in the garage,some other info about me is that i have 7 kid's,3 are married,and i have 8 grandkids.hope to hear from all of you here.lastly as i allways say;I DO NOT SUGGEST TO ANYONE TO TO KEEP FISH AS I DO,it just happens to work for me!!!

Sam was my brother and he was an expert on fresh water fish. He won awards and he was a popular speaker at events in the early 1970s. He was also an expert photographer and blended the two specialities together. He passed away in 1974. I recently realized that it must have appeared that he dropped off the map to people in the fish community.

I love this site. I've looked at a few sites over the years, but this one is great and the first one where I wanted to be involved, Oh, and I made aquarium of the week this week! I was so surprised and delighted.

I have had black water, freshwater, fast water stream, and coastal aquariums. Just now
I have a 55gal. with a 4U Fluval interior filter , river rock, fresh water. I haven't had any problems in years,but with the bright hot sun here grew a great big bunch of hairy algae which I got under control with algae eaters, corydoras, and a golden snail added.limited light also.

Hi,

I got an aquarium about a month ago. Last week we had a power failure from about a day. When the power came back ON, within about 5 minutes, all my guppies died. Then over the next 12 hours or so, my zebras died... the only fish that survived was my Banjo Catfish.

I bought a betta yesterday to ease my sorrows. (Tears...) He makes me happy, but I miss all my other fish. I'd named them each, watched them while relaxing and reading for hours. I SOOoooo... miss them!

I am enjoying my 2 surface breathers though, as best as I can.

Any suggestions as to how to survive a power failure in the future, should I want to buy any more non-surface breathers?

I'm Nelle and am from Wisconsin. I got a 10 gallon one year ago with zebra danios and serpae tetras (I got a 29 to house them in about a month later since it was to cramped for them). Then I was at the pet store with my dad and was looking at guppies. The guy who worked there was trying to downsize his guppy tank at home and asked if i wanted some of his fish. I said yes, and he dropped off another 10 gallon with beautiful red and blue guppies for free and gave me two cory catfish to go with. Then awhile passed and Christmas came. I asked my parents for a 55 gallon and it was a resounding no. Finally I got my dad to agree without my mom knowing and we went and picked up a used tank and broght it home. My mom wasn't happy about it at first, but once it was set up she liked it and still likes it now. I did have to take down the 29 since my parents want as few tanks up as possible while I'm at college, but i still have my 55 and 10 gallon up and running and they will stay while i'm away since my dad is getting more and more into liking fishkeeping.

Hi everyone!

My name is Nora and I live in Wichita, Kansas. I've just recently taken up my freshwater fish hobby again.

After that I simply didn't have the time necessary to devote to fish keeping-with college and two jobs I was pretty darn busy!!with 3 swordtails & 3 platys (both 1 male to 2 females), and 1 spotted cory cat. I also have a 10 gallon with one male guppy and one female--who gave birth to about 15 fry a few days ago! :-D

I had forgotten how much fun it is to have live bearing fish!

I'm really looking forward to getting more involved in the forums and meeting fellow enthusiasts!
