I would definetly get a good book on fishkeeping. I do not understand much about fish cycling myself. I am still in the process of getting a good test kit. Hope you enjoy this website. I always like trying to help people on this website.

Welcome to the addiction....I mean hobby!
Good advice can be hard to find, but sites like this make it much easier then when I started. The best piece of advice I could give you is to get a couple of good books on general fishkeeping that will help you build your own knowledge base. Fishkeeping can be challenging but also very rewarding.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, but rest assured that your not alone. Unfortunately most of the folks working at the stores you mentioned are strickly sales people, not practicing aquarists. I can't guarantee perfect answers, but I can say you will always get more than "shrug" here. Welcome, and I look forward to tackling some of your questions. The first thing you should do is some reading up on the nitrogen cycle (aka "cycling"), since that was likely the problem with the fish you lost. Hello There,
My name is Chelsea. I just found this website about a week ago, although I had unknowingly "Googled" these articles a couple of times. I'm new to fish keeping [I've been keeping fish for 2 1/2 months and am only 17 years old], and have found the most helpful articles so far on this site. I just subscribed to AFI a day ago and can't wait to receive it.
I just wanted to introduce myself among the other members because I often have unanswered questions. I'm thrilled that I may have found people to answer them. Let's face it, Petco/Petland/Petsmart is rather unreliable. I have bought 4 fish [Red Capped Oranda named Kiwi, Fantail named Mango, and 2 bettas named Leonardo and Raphael] and an African Dwarf Frog [Toad] from these general stores. Raphael is the only surviver. I interrogated the Pet___ fish care "specialists" about possible answers and I've only received shrugs.
Again, I just wanted to introduce myself and hope that the answers I receive on this site will be more reliable than "shrug."

Oh, by the way, I currently have another Red Capped Oranda named Donatello in a 10 gallon planted tank and Raphael was just moved from a cozy, but small none-the-less, jar-type-thing to a roomy planted 2 1/2 gallon tank yesterday.

They're both still alive, and I'm proud of that fact.
