I don't know anything about fixing electrical things. I asked at my lfs and they said it is probably the starter and to try that before buying a whole new hood as it is less expensive.

RE: My dad decided on Discus

It could be the starter or ballast. Or it could be a number of other things. I have fixed two Coralife Aqualights now, one that had two wires melt together for some reason and shorted, and one that had a wire detach from one of the holes where the bulb prongs go. Just be careful if you do any work on the light yourself...it can be very dangerous.

RE: My dad decided on Discus

My dad has the Discus in his 125 gal. tank. He knew he couldn't keep the Cichlids anymore so he gave them to me. I've only added one fish since an Arrawana. I haven't added anymore because I don't want to over stock my tank.

I think I need to buy some more rocks for the Cichlids though. I have a camera so I will get some pictures soon. I think I have to replace my starter? in the hood. My lights don't work and they are brand new.

RE: My dad decided on Discus

I have a book that I could identify them with if it is a common cichlid. I hope you don't plan on adding Discus to that tank. They won't last long.... You should find out what type of cichlids you have before adding any other fish. Most african cichlids are aggressive....

My dad decided on Discus

I have a 47 gal. bow front tank. In it I have two Cichlids. I'm not sure if they are African or South American. I also have one Arrawanna. (sp?). I use a canister filter made for 100 gal. tank. I hope to upgrade in about a year and a half to a larger tank. As I've learned that Arawannas can become large.

I have learned so much already and have only been here a few days. I hope to learn a lot more. I'm glad this site is here and I'm glad I've come across it.
