I hated to lose him, but it definitely lowered the bioload on my tank, and allowed me to get a school of tetras, which helped emphasize the South American/Amazon river theme of the tank. As of now, there are only South American fish in the tank, which I really like. When I can afford another large tank, maybe I'll try another eel. Although lately I've really been getting interested in both saltwater tanks, as well as lungfish. Lungfish are just amazing creatures, although they have fairly specific care requirements.

I wish I had some newer pictures, but I'm not at home right now. My gf tells me the plants have just gone crazy in the tank, and are doing awesome. Once I'm back home I'll be uploading some pictures so everyone can see. I'm also going to be building a custom canopy for the tank, to help direct the light more into the tank, and to help reduce some of the evaporation.

RE: Fish finally in the 125g!

over time your eel will eat out of your hands. currently i can hand feed mine. watch out though sharp teeth. i think my eel is the best thing in the tank right now. hes funny to watch and he is usually the first one to the surface when the tank lid opens.

RE: Fish finally in the 125g!

Awsome anglefish! All told, not including the fish and plants, I probably spend between $800-900. The tank was $400 pre-drilled, and the rest was the stand, sump, plumbing, lighting, and sand substrate. It cost more than I expected, but it was definitely worth it in my opinion.

Oh yah, I also had to place supports underneath the floor to make sure it would hold the tank, but I already had all that wood.

RE: Fish finally in the 125g!

I think (as I said before) that your tank setup is absoloutely fabulous! They are reported to get up to 3 feet long, but he was only about 13 inches in that picture. They are very active, intelligent fish. Unfortunately, I think his curiosity got the better of him, and he must have jumped out of the tank and gotten eaten by one of my other pets, because he disappeared a couple weeks ago and hasn't been seen since.

RE: Fish finally in the 125g!

I think that your eel is very pretty What kind is it?

RE: Fish finally in the 125g!

I didn't put a background because I like the wall color showing from behind the tank. They show the 2 new large amazon swords I added, the spotted pictus catfish, and the school of Bleeding Heart Tetra's I added the other day. They've been pretty subdued, schooling very tightly, but I don't know how much of that was due to the attention my tire track eel had been paying them (i think his eyes are bigger than his mouth, fortunately).

Since the eels gone missing this morning, they are actively swimming in a large, loose school all over the tank, definitely enjoying the space.

RE: Fish finally in the 125g!

Awesome tank, love the drift wood and sand base. It's recommended that they be moved into, or their tank slowly converted into, a brackish tank as they mature. They are both about 14 inches tall, with 2 long stems sticking up beyond the surface of the water. They only cost $1 more than the little 4 inch swords, so I figured why the heck not!

The dragon fish is technically called a Violet Goby, or Dragon Goby. They get up to 24 inches in length according to most sources. Mine is about 13 inches right now, so he's got a way to go before he's fully grown. They're actually fairly peaceful. Mine gets along with every other fish in the tank. The only thing he doesn't like is when the eel gets to laying on top of him in a hiding spot.

RE: Fish finally in the 125g!

Wow. The 3 angels now actually swim like they're part of a school, rather than chasing each other around the tank. The eel and goby both enjoy being able to actually swim around.

I think the only one who's not super happy is the pictus, because he's used to having a better hiding spot than this tank provides. He'll get used to it, though.

I also picked up a school of Bleeding Heart tetra's today. They're in the 20g for now (its been empty since I moved the other fish to the 125g). There are 14 of them right now, and I'm going to pick up probably another 10-11 of them next Tuesday. I'm going to be putting them in the 125g as well. I know that they'll be small enough for the eel to eat once he's fully grown, but I think they'll be ok. They are fast enough to keep away from him for the most part, and big enough I don't think he'll immediately see them as food.

RE: Fish finally in the 125g!

Great photos -- and really great looking fish. It also looks like your diatom bloom is already starting, which is not surprising given all the silica sand in there. Just be patient and wait it out, and keep the leaves of the plants as free of it as possible. Frequent water changes right from the start will help (the biggest issue is the free silica still floating through the water column)

RE: Fish finally in the 125g!

And a few more (these were taken about an hour after the lights turned off, so the Dragonfish, Eel, and pictus were much more active).

Fish finally in the 125g!

Here are some pics of my fish finally in they're permanent home, the 125g tank.

I don't have any pics of the pictus or BN pleco yet, but I'll get some soon.
