I have read that the Gambusias can prolong giving birth until water conditions are right. Also the female must be spereated, and water temp up around 80 F.

RE: Gambusia Holbrooki

The lake that some of my relatives live on has a large shoal of these fish. I went out one day, and while everyone else was fishing with a pole, I used one of the little 2" fish nets to catch some. I only caught 2, and one got eaten by my goldfish. The other, a female, is about ready to give birth, and I can't wait! They are really underestimated. I am glad someone else thinks they are interesting.

RE: Gambusia Holbrooki

They are free. As long as you don't travel too far to collect them. I found this pond about 3 miles from my house. So these were free!

RE: Gambusia Holbrooki

Those are really nice fish and there free. I am thinking of collecting some wild fish this summer myself...blue spotted sunfish probably. Looks like some of yours were already gravid too, which is typical with livebearers, but neat anyway.

Gambusia Holbrooki

Wild Mosquito Fish I collected myself.
