I would definetly go with guppies. I have two fry that I have I am raising. I believe that in another month or two they will be full grown. I have found that ,since I have lots of fish besides guppies in my tank, that when one of my guppies gives birth there is always a hunt for food in my tank. I then can't save very many.

RE: First Time Fish Breeding

i got to agree with everone, that live bearers are realy easy to breed, me and my brother share a 10 gallon tank with all live bearers and if you plan to do live bearers you should do some reasearch on spacificley what fish you want to breed because in our tank we had 2 pregnant females and when they gave berth we dident seperate the fry and males, soo lets just say the adult males had a nice snack that night...

RE: First Time Fish Breeding

what other fish do you have in there? i find that a small flower pot works out well. the female should have almost a red pink tint to her belly when she is ready to mate also. It is also likely that the guppy you purchased was not very old and thus only yeilded a few offspring. As guppies reach their peak of breeding age, they can sometimes produce 40 to 60 offspring each breeding. So you should get better results later on down the road.

RE: First Time Fish Breeding

Removing pregnant guppies from the water (to move them into a breeder net, for instance) close to term can injure the young & mother alike, and decrease their chance of survival.

Depending on what sort of breeder net you have, the cross-flow may be weak and ammonia/nitrite may be more concentrated where the fry are, also hurting their chances of survival.

Livebearer fry are pretty big (relatively speaking) and can usually accept finely crushed flakes from birth, although they are sometimes born a bit prematurely with noticeable eggsacks still hanging from their bellies. They won't eat anything until this is gone. Be careful not to overfeed them, which is very easy to do since a single pre-crushed flake is likely to be larger than an individual fry and can feed an entire brood.

RE: First Time Fish Breeding

It is normal to lose a lot of fry. This means you will have to raise the babies for around 3 months, feeding them heavily, doing water changes often.

RE: First Time Fish Breeding

also its best to have 2 tanks.plus you've got to buy food the good stuff isn't to cheap.its hard to make money off them cause they don't many fry.but once you get the hang of it it can be fairly easiy(sp)good luck to you

RE: First Time Fish Breeding

To add, young females and old ones will produces smaller batches--6-18 fry at times. You should also consider the percentage that reaches maturity. Typically, at least 5% will simply never make it. If the tank isn't kept clean, that number of "doomed fry" could be as high as 35%. I'm not saying this to discourage you at all. I'm just giving you a head's up on what to expect.

RE: First Time Fish Breeding

most guppies only have 30 to 40 babies and you would need more than one female if you keep them together.have you ever bred guppies before?

RE: First Time Fish Breeding

My LFS told me today that if I bred guppies they would buy the babies, I am seriously thinking about making a buck off of this! If I did I would only use a single female. I could easily get 100 guppies off one interaction between my Tropican(Had him for almost a year, colorful, large 1.5 inches, heathy). That would be $100 profit. Hope you do well! Their babies are very cute. Platies have been spoken by experts to be the ideal community fish, they are hardy, docile, and breed readily. Platies are my favorite livebearers. You may want to reconsider to platies. I think platies are so much cuter than guppies. But, some people like guppies, some prefer platies. So, you want you might, only might want to reconsider to platies. There are many color varieties: natural blue, orange, yellow, spotted, mickey mouse, and many more.

RE: First Time Fish Breeding

ok i would look in to them.find out how they like the water ect.how many are you going to start with.oh BTW the one in my siggy is one i bred.good luck

RE: First Time Fish Breeding

Hello,
Thanks for the advice.
