looks similar to a defense mechanism plecos use when they are fritened of useing the chromatofores in their skin to lighten and darken themselves if they fell lonely or scared to death maybe even the tank is to active for him and hes freaking out

It doesn't sound like a disease so much as excess mucous production due to stress. Is it like there is a whitish haze on parts of the fish? '

And what kind of filter do you have? It's not often you encounter airline-operated box filters and the like in this hobby anymore. They're not really the best way to go unless you have a low fish load and very small tank.

Here's some more questions to help us get to the bottom of this. Please try to answer all questions as best you can.

What size is your tank?
What do you have for fish (please include how many as well as what species)?
How long has this tank been set up?
What is your maintenance routine (water changes, gravel vacuuming, filter maintenance, etc)?
And definitely answer questions the previous poster asked (with the test readings in numbers if possible), as those are very important. If you don't have the kits, your local fish store can probably test the water for you...just make sure they give you the numbers.

Is the tank cycled?

please post your nitrate,nitrite, ammonia, and PH levels. I'm sure one of the experts here can help you but they will need this information first.

Half Dark Half Light Fish

I have a turquoise rainbowfish that is very dark on the back half of its body and very light on the front half. The two other fish of mine that have had this died within a couple of days. I can't find any information on the web about this and don't want to loose another fish to this disease. Does anybody know what this is and how to treat it. My filter was down for a little bit due to my cat chewing on air line so water quality may have been the cause, but I've since fixed that and the water is fine know.
