He set up a 40 breeder 2 months ago and used 60 lbs. of fine aragonite sand giving it a average depth of 4 inches. So two months later the sand still has bubbles coming out of it. He stirred it before and lightly vaccumed it thinking it was air trapped but it still is there. Some have told him its a poisonous gas others have said its the final stage of the nitrogen cycle. I dont believe either but really dont know what to tell him. His livestock consist of 2 clowns, a Anemone, feather dusters, crabs, snails, starfish, and a lot of kenya tree coral and all is doing great. So what is up with the steady streams of micro bubbles coming out of the sand? Issue bega about a month ago with a weekend power shortage that induced a big die off in the tank.

After have cleaned and re-cycled the tank, problems showed up a bout a week after new fish introduced. Something akin to a "brownish algae or diatom is grown in the tank now. There seem to be bubble forming on the surface of the growth both on the areas of substrate and live rock that its infesting at the moment.

Tank water has been thought a battery of test both by my mother a competent aquarist and the aquarium store owners locally. All of my hermit crabs got killed by my crab that just died a week ago. I couldnt find any pepermint shrimp and cleaners were way overpriced.($25) Pepermints were more reasonable.($6) I ended up getting some hermit crabs and a yellow watchman goby. The watchman goby was on sale but even before they were on sale they were reasonable.($7) Im not sure if a scooter blenny ($9) would have been better for getting the apista. I read that the goby will eat them and so do hermit crabs. I also was wondering what a good way to tell if your tank is healthy (ex. bright nosed rummy nose tetras and water sprite growing like crazy) in saltwater. I dont have strong enough lights for corals. I have several feather dusters that started from just one largeish one. They are very healthy and my fish are very active and healthy. Is there one fish or invert that is the ultimate way to tell if a tank is healthy. Oh, and is $10 a good deal on tomato clowns?

bubbles coming for rocks

I have had my saltwater tank (29 Bio) up and running for over two years. Last Monday (6 days ago), my middle son fed "Spots" 2 silver sides. I later realized he fed him some older ones, and not from the new package that was still unopened. I fear those old ones had thawed and been refrozen. He only ate 2. He usually eats 4-5 of them, 2-3 times per week. He is the only thing in the tank other than some live rock. There could be a few hermit crabs - could he have swallowed one? I notice no skin issues, nothing odd around the gills, possibly some labored breathing although he always looked similar as par for the eel course of respiration.

On Wed, I thought Spots was acting oddly - out of his usual hiding spot, sitting in the corner. He was a rescue 8 months ago whom the previous owner had for 6-8 years. I have no idea how old he was when that owner obtained him. He came in a 55 gallon with no other tankmates. The tank was filthy, and while his water parameters are now: amm: 0, nitrite 0, nitrates .25, pH 8.2, there have been a couple of ammonia spikes in the beginning and a salinity spike about a month ago, maybe even more.

He would not eat Wed, but I thought perhaps he wasn't hungry, though still alarmed at his posture.

Since then, he has deteriorated. At times, he seems normal, other times he appears to be near death, lying with either his neck bent upwards or even back onto his body. He is 18 inches long - 2 feet. A few times, he's been laying on his back.

I contacted an "aquatic exotic vet" who finally returned my calls only to say she has no experience with eels. She gave me the number of a vet in Marathon (Keys - we are in Ft. Lauderdale), whom I have emailed twice and called once. He finally returned my email last night with a standart "out of the office until 8/20." I am very upset.

The LFS told me to try Melafix. I haven't seen any improvement. Another told me the eels can have an abdominal issue "they work out on their own." A third told me that it didn't sound good, but try some Espson salt as it's a laxative. He briefly perked up after that, but is once again, lying on his side and sometimes his back.

Please help if you have any idea what is going on or what I should do. One LFS employee suggested copper. Is that a good idea?

Thanks,

Dana

Unknown worm

I'm posting two pictures of this type of worm I keep finding in my sand. I was finally able to catch this one. I've seen them for the past month or so but they are hard to find and when I try to catch them they quickly bury themselves in the sand until I can't find them anymore.
So a couple questions:
1. Do you know what kind of animal this is?
2. Is it harmful to my reef tank (corals, polyps, anemones, crabs, fish, etc.)
3. My question is on the 90 I was running a mag 7 and it did a great job and was quiet. Unfortunately when I let the 90 go the mag 7 went with it.

Now on the 150 I bought a pump rated about 1200gph at 5' but it was cheap and is far too loud and I am going to replace it. ( only been running 24 hours so I don't know if they quite down with time )

Since the 150 has dual drains / returns I was toying with the idea of instead of running just one pump ( maybe a mag 1200 or Quite one 5000 ) I was thinking of running two independent sumps and return pumps.

My thought is if I run two smaller pumps they should be quieter but give me the same if not better flow.

What's everyone's opinion?

Thanks,

Jeff

New saltwater tank, ammonia spike

I have a 5 gallon pico saltwater tank. The damn guy at the fish store said I could add livestock a week after cycling and I listened, stupid me. Anyway I just did a 25% water change and also added some nutrifin cycle to help get everything going quicker. I am just afraid it is going to hurt the livestock. We started this time (after a career in reefkeeping in the mid eighties, fighting off goo and ichthyosaurs) with a little 29 gal. Biocube. First thing we knew we had to change was the light, as the MH fixture sounded like a jet warming up in the living room, and the second was the skimmer, which was a teeny airstone thing. Back in the Olden Days only people on Mt. Olympus has protein skimmers, so I wanted to do it right. I invested in a Tunze skimmer, partly because of the reputation of the name and partly because it would fit in our refugium.

At first it wouldn't work at all, and after emailing Tunze we found all the impellers produced around Christmas were faulty. They sent us a new one. Boy, did it bubble! As the tank was quite clean there was not much scum to clean, but it emitted great clouds of tiny bubbles, like the Don Ho song. I emailed them about that and they told us to wait until the end of March, for the break-in period to finish.

It's not the end of March yet, but the level of bubbling ought to be reducing by now (3 months?) and it isn't. I've taken to leaving it off in the daytime so we can have some visibility, though I don't know whether turning it off lets all the accumulated DOC back into the water. The small bit of stuff in the cup is completely clear, still, though our nitrate levels have gotten as high as 10 at times. The tank is not heavily populated by fish, by the way.

We haven't put the skimmer in after the pump in the sump-water line, which is one reason Tunze suggests bubble production, but right after the inlet from the tank.

Does anyone have an idea why we are so much like a good champagne in there? We were so looking forward to having a good skimmer. And is there any problem with turning them off for periods?

We're two old scuba divers and survivors of the crude live-rock and finger's-crossed period. I have a year-old 29 gallon mini reef with three firefish, a single pajama cardinalfish, a bunch of mushroom corals and zoas, and a mated pair of hi fin banded gobies (Stonogobiops nematodes) with their tiger pistol shrimp symbiont (Alpheus bellulus).

I am having problems with my gobies currently. About two weeks ago, my once-outgoing pair of gobies suddenly became reclusive and skittish. At the slightest movement of a fish into their field of vision, the two would dive into their cave (shared with the shrimp and the occasional firefish), and it seemed to be getting worse by the day. I suspected that the two were mating (although I cannot distinguish the two by gender).

Things reached a head today when I came home from school to find one of my gobies in the front of the shrimp's cave as normal and the other goby clear across the tank looking a bit pale, but with no other external symptoms. I fed it small pieces of jumbo krill until its color returned, but it stayed in the corner of the tank and would not budge.

My question is if I should do anything right now to solve any problems that my goby may be having. Is it about to lay eggs? Is it sick? Or did my pair of gobies just have a divorce?

My ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are all 0. I am running a month-old Prizm protein skimmer and a fluval 405 canister filter. My light is a compact fluorescent fixture with an actinic bulb, and it runs on a 12-hour cycle. I have a minor flatworm problem that I control via siphoning. The only bully present that I could think of would be my pajama cardinalfish, which has had an attitude problem ever since I bought him (he has killed several tankmates). Finally, I performed a 30% water change yesterday.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Prolonged water changes

I have a problem, I do not have an RO system. Biocube and we are currently experiencing a heatwave in my area. The salinity level in my tank is continuously spiking to a whopping 1.032 and I have removed all of my suffering corals in an effort to save them and I'm only running the blue aitinic light now. I've already lost two pink tipped anemones but my long spined urchin and other small invertebrates seem unaffected. I test the salinity twice a day now and I have to do water changes almost daily. Other than the high salinity, the water quality is almost perfect but I'm afraid that the constant spiking and water changes are going to do serious damage to my tank's health considering it's small size. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get the salt content to level off amid this heat?

Nitrates!!!

What am I doing wrong here? I've taken the canister filter out of the equation, I added a power head to the main tank, I added a bigger pump to my Remora skimmer to boost it's output, and yet my Nitrates are still hovering around 20 ppm. Whenever I do a water change (3 in the last 9 days, one 25%, one 20% and a 10 gallon last), the Nitrates recover down to 15 ppm, but then right back up to 20. the only other difference in my straight across the board zero's is the P/H has been up and down a bit. I've posted a photo of my chart at; http://s1191.photobucket.com/albums/z475/john_346/ it's the first photo. I'm feeding so little that I'm worried I'm going to starve my fish. I'm getting a lot of brown algae again, but mu lights are only on for about four hours a day. The problem I have is whenever I do a water change, my protein skimmer stops making scum for a day, and while it's out of commission, the nitrates take hold again. Maybe someone will know what I need to do, maybe looking at the chart is obvious, but I'm really getting at a loss of what to do now. I don't want to add chemicals to get it there. ???

Uggggh I lost them all.

I had my 29 gallon tank running pretty good with my green clown goby, red headed fairy wrasse and puple firefish. My copapod population had skyrocketed due to liberal plantings of them. I was at the four week mark and added a royal gramma then 3 days later the gramma had ich all over. and died a day later, but not before infecting the tank. I then went to the lfs and they suggested prasi pro and and three treatments later they are all dead.the clown goby died without ich spots. But the firefish had ich and today looked like velvet peeling off before it died and then my wrasse which which although was fairly sick for a time now looked healthy but slightly stressed and some really small ich spots was found caught between some live rock. Maybe he got stuck but I dont think so.

Anyways I just checked parameters and well it wasnt all good temp 79 PH 7.8 nitrites 0 amonia less than .25 and nitrates at 0. I did a 50 percent water change this afternoon to apply the Prasi-Pro. But it looks like I had a spike in ammonia. Oh well just bummed that I lost some great fish. Also the water is a bit cloudy hmmm.

Good thing my 10 gallon micro reef is rocking. That is such a fun tank. lol maybe I should have stopped at that one.

Cleaning tank results in fish loss!

Need Help!!!
The last two times that I have cleaned my tank it has resulted in fish death! the first time was about a week ago and I lost a Royal Gramma and my Blue Tang both of which I have owned for four years! Other tankmates include 2 clowns, 1 silver scat 1 engineering goby and a handful of fiddler crabs and hermit crabs. The water parameters are all correct and I keep up with water changes etc. My puffer used to be outgoing, almost doglike if you tapped on the glass he would follow your finger no matter where you went with it. He was active and energetic and had a great appetite which consisted of frozen brine and mysis shrimp and the saltwater flakes. One day in September, I noticed he was not his active self. The only thing that was different that day than any other day was that my friends young children were at the house and the only thing that could have possibly happened but was never confirmed was that he MAY have been hit in the head with the magnet type cleaner that scrapes the glass. My daughter said she thought they were "cleaning the tank" while I got the mail, which would only be a minute or two. But since that day, he is not the same. He sits on the bottom of the tank for most of the day. He will swim around occasionally but dosent have the energy or personality like he used to. The only way he will eat now if I manually put the food directly in front of his mouth, and I now give him fresh large shrimp and clams on the halfshell as suggested by my fish retailer. If I do happen to put the flakes in the tank or the mysis shrimp for the other fish, he will swim around all disoriented, and upside down and on his side, etc. I have tried to find a "fish vet" or somebody that can observe him and hopefully treat him. He looks ok some of the time, and the other time he looks like a fish that is on his way out. What boggles my mind is that this has been going on for 4 months, so I dont think it is a disease. His body looks fine other than the fact that he has lost weight but there are no lesions or marks or any indication of a disease. I would GREATLY appreciate any help that is offered. I could send a video of his behavior if that would help. Please offer any help you can think of, he is my favorite fish! thank you in advance!

green hair algea

I need suggestions on what to do to get rid of this terrible green hair algea that is growing all over my live rock. It has covered all of my live rock but has stopped growing on the tanks glass. I have told my lfs about this algea problem but all they have suggested is that i close all blinds in the room so there is no direct sun light, and they told me to buy some snails, witch i did yesterday. I bought 5 little turbo snails and one big mexican snail. So far they have not done anything but crawl around on the sand and the glass. I have had the blinds in the room closed for about 3 weeks and it has seemed to stop the algea from growing on the glass , but it still remains on the live rock. I have tried to pick it off and i have removed a great deal of it, but i just can't get it all. My local fish store also tested my water and said it was one of the best samples they had seen and that every thing was fine. I really dont know what else to do, besides maybe lowering the amount of time my light is on. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know i would really like to get rid of this algea.

New Strain of Extreme Ich

A few weeks ago I purchased a fish from my LFS and it survived for 2 days it died suddenly it died. It had ich but I didn't think anything of it since virtually all fish get it when they are a new tankmate but it suddenly just died I figured it was just new tank stress and didn't worry about it. Then about a week later my Blue Tang and Royal Gramma that I had for four years suddenly had ich!! They previously were healthy as horses! 2 days later they both were dead!! Suddenly all my fish were getting ich and dying!! I was loosing an average of 2 fish a day!! I was trying to get advice from every expert i could think of and they were all speculations on water quality and other parasites even though i could see nothing else and my broad spectrum treatments were not helping at all!!! I did all the water tests over and over and nothing was wrong!!! So I figured it had to be the ich so i dug deeper into my research and found that there is a new strain of ich starting to show up on the market that is immune to all common medications including COPPER!!!!! It is much more virulent and kills fish within 24 to 48 hours of treatment. Now 2 weeks later I have lost EVERY fish that I have, even my mandarin fish which is normally completely resistant!!!I'm writing this because no one seems to have heard about this so wanted to inform people about this incase they get it because by the time I realized what I had it was to late I will post a link to the info I found below. I did find that there are things that still may treat it like Quinine Sulfate and hyposalinity. The one thing that this has taught me is that a quarantine tank is something that you must have!!! For the record I had a 75 gallon tank with 20 fish in it. If you have had experience with something like this or want to just add a comment I would appreciate it! I recently added 2 yellowtail damsels to my FOLWR tank. They were fine and happy for a week, and then this morning they are gone! I fed them last night, and they were swimming around with the other fish and now they are nowhere to be found. The tank contains 2 cardinals, 2 bluegreen reef chromis, 1 sailfin blenny, and a naked goby. There are also assorted hermits, snails, 2 emerald crabs, and 2 pistol shrimp. I haven't had a problem with any of those before. The water is in excellent condition, and I do weekly 20% water changes. Any Ideas? Do I mayme have a rogue bristle worm or something? Then I took a peak at my thermometer my temp was up a good 2 degrees reading 80 Degrees. The normal tank temp is 76-78 degrees (saltwater set-up). Also I noticed the heater was still on so I disconected and hooked it up to timer for the night. I set it to stay off for 3 hours then go on for a half hour then back off and on two hours. I figured that it shouldn't get too hot or cold in that amount of time, which would give me enough time to check in in the morning before work. I also noticed some moisture in the form of bubbles inside the unit. As of now I plan on getting a new heater in the tommorow. Can anyone suggest a good quality heater that will last more then a year like my last one? My tank is 45 gallons, my current heater is 150w Aqueon submersible heater which I think may be too small. All help is appreciated, thanks.

Cloudy Water

Got a question about my tank. Came back from the Philippines about 10 days ago and noticed my water was cloudy in my main tank. Fish were fine, and all water tests checked out. (0 Amm, 0 Phos, 0 Nitrites and 20 nitrates, 8.3 pH) Did a 25% water change a few days ago and added some coppersafe to the tank because my clown trigger has started getting ich recently. All the other fish are fine but i still have the cloudiness in the water. New filter sponges, no carbon (because of the coppersafe) and old biological filters. Any ideas what could be causing the cloudy waters? Could it just be algae blooms or something, and in that case, maybe add some algaefix? Advice would be welcome, thanks guys

What's up with my Koran Angel ?

 Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, I hope it's one where you actually get suggestions unlike others ! I've spent two days trying to figure out what is wrong with my Koran Angel. For starters. . . . .

120 gallon, temp. 78, sal. 1.024, amm. 0, nitrite 0. nitrate 0, cal. 420, mag. 1200. 150 lbs. live rock, 1 inch of live sand. 55 gal. sump, protein skimmer. Up and running for 8 months total w/ clean up crew. Water changes done with distilled water, no dosing.

So, I have a Koran angel approx 2 inches long. Right now he's the only fish in the tank besides a few dwarf hermits. I've had him for about 2 weeks. A couple days ago I noticed that his tail was half gone, not a clean cut but sorta frayed. His coloring is off, the black background of his body is sorta white, he now looks marbled. He shakes his head accasionally like he is annoyed with something and every now and then he will just dart across the tank and back again. He is not scratching and I see no ich spots on him. He still eats like a pig. I put him in QT last night so I can treat him, but am not sure what to treat him with. I treated him with prazipro when I first got him. Any suggestions as to what the problem is with him? I know they are one of those angels that morph into a totally different color, but I think he is too young to be changing any. Amy ideas would be greatly appeciated.

Manjano's

I have a 55 gal saltwater, fish and reef tank.
