THE HEATER BUSTED AND SHE DIDNT KNOW ABOUT IT AND IT CAUGHT THE ENTIRE CABINET AND HOOD ON FIRE.... \=(

I LOST M,OST OF MY LIVESTOCK. AND ALL MY INVERTS EXCEPT ONE HERMIT CRAB... THE ONLY FISH I HAVE LEFT ARE MY 2 PAJAMA CARDINALS, AND MY PINK SPOT GOBY... =( =( =( =(

I just got 6 white clouds on saturday, and I liked them a lot. Forst tostart off with, when I went to the petsmart, one of the employees who bagged the fish made it extremely stressful for them. She just caught the fish in the net, dropped them into the contaner, and then she put the bag over it, and turned the container upsidedown! And then she just simply tied the bag and gave it to me without even pumping oxygen in it! She also gave a me a fish witha jaw problem! On the wayback, that fish was so stressed the whole time! It was like getting someone who got bit by a rattle snake to the hospital! When I got home, I aclimated them (to parameters too), and the fish seemed a little better, but after a while, it was kind of sticking to the surface like a betta. It started gasping, and then when I came back after an hour, it was dead! I have a gold gourami in there, but suprisingly, I quietly observed it for an hour, and she didn't do a thing to the white clouds! I could tell the death was stress related. So I put that white cloud ia plastic bag, sealed it tight, and put it ina the very bottom of the freezer, so I could show the pet store and get new one, and this time make sure they bagged the fish right. The other death of the second one wasn't really the stores fault or my fault, but either the fish jumped out, or my cat went ontop of the hood and stuck her paws into the open part and grabbed it like she didi to my old blue gourami. When I got home, I just looked under the aquarium stand, and there was the little white cloud.

my bigist ghost shrimp did today probly of old age.He lived thru a nitrite crash when his buddy died. i tested the water and it was fine so i'm gesing it was old age. RIP sorry about speling.

I walked into my local walmart with the family and walked off to the pet section of walmart with my stepbrother. I looked at the fish when I saw something that i wish I could forget for the rest of my life. There was a water pump in a tank that was sucking several fish to the wall. There was one that was spewing blood from it's gills. Still alive! Authough I never really knew you... R.I.P.

I'm so disappointed I got this beautiful golden ram from a place in downtown la in Chinatown and had it for a while but one of my lyretail mollys was infected with some disease and my ram caught it So sad because he was beautiful and coated about 8.00 dollars. o well may he rest in peace.

And those of you who have had a beautiful fish freshwater or saltwater that has passed away I would enjoy to hear your story as well as many other great aquarium owners.

I FEEL SO BAD ABOUT MYSELF :-(

I'm on the way to the locally owned pet-store because they will take my fry. When I was scooping them up I noticed one had it's eye and face chewed off. So I did the only humane thing. I placed him in a ziploc bag with some water, and put him in the freezer. I think he's already dead. Now I have that feeling of guilt in my stomach and I feel like I'm going to cry. I was giving him to the pet-store and I still feel horrible!!!! Sigh....

My male and female Dwarf Powder Blue Gourami's both on Christmas. (of all days!) I had noticed earlier in the week that my Honey Gourami's belly was swollen (didnt have a male of her kind and didnt know if they interbred) and noticing that I examined the two D.P.B Gouramis:: they were darker around thier edges and more sluggish. Their eyes seemed different and their orange strips werent as noticable. They were sick looking but I didnt know why. Then on Christmas I find the pair side by side (like always) at the bottom of my tank dead. I felt sooo bad! I have relocated my fish to another tank ((( I moved into a house of my own, so fish had to move anyway ))) and my Honey Gourami seems fine still and her stomach is going back to her normal figure...did she abort a pregnancy due to stress of the move??? I dunno but Im sorry for them all.

well i got home yehsterday and a discovered that whon of my ghost shrimp was dead with the other won rite next to him(still alive) and what luke suspishis was that the dead won had no legs. but then we tested the water an the nitrites wear hi. so now i'm going to temporarily put him in my 20g.. RIP

well i didnt have him for that long only for like 3 or 4 days but he was an aldolfi corydora that almost died on monday because he got a little bit to close to the filter and got stuck to it but i got him off. he seamed to be recovering yesterday but today i got home and he was laying on his side barely breathing so we took him out because the gouramies were picking at him (those little buggers) and we kept him in a container until he passed away. then we buried him outside. RIP

The Silver dollar looking fish was euthanize by LFS cause it might have been a piranha. I bought my fishtank from craigslist and a couple fish came with the tank. I got bored with them and wanted goldfish. I didn't know it could be a piranha! Can anyone verify what fish is it?

I just got home today and i looked in my aquarium and saw a horibble site. My marbled crayfish was eating another crayfish. And i know that it was not a exoskeleton because there was the coloration of the cray and that it hade meat on it. So my questions are: How did this happen? Is another crayfish at risk? Are the fish in the tank ate risk? What should i do with the crayfish if i need to separate them?

Here is the tank: 20g with 3 black fantom tetras,1 corydora,3 neon tetras,3 harlaquin rasboras,2 dwarf gourami and 4 o i guess 3 marbled crayfish.

Lost two spotted puffers because the guy at wal-mart told me they would be fine in a small 1 gallon and I could change the water once a month because I had a filter It was because of this I decided to do research and seek true guidance.

My male betta Sam died today. I don't know what happend to him, he looked fine and then I found him this morning dead. His head was swollen the same way my other bettas was when he died out of the blue. I had had Sam almost 2 years and he was a red white and blue crowntail betta. :'( RIP my little betta.

Crash and Burn

I have been battling and out break in the saltwater tank. I blame my limited knowledge and my lack of equipment. The numbers in my tank we drifting (nitrate, ph, alkalinity) and I had a quickly building ich problem. I didn't have a quarantine tank ready. Before I realized what was happening all my fish were infested. I tried to give the fish a immune system boost. To late, the gobies are gone. They both became weak very quickly. I didn't even see them dead, the crabs were that quick. I have been nursing the male clown fish for the past few days. He was losing color fast and not swimming right. I couldn't stop the down turn. The other two fish. The female clown and the hawkeye were not looking that well and the hawkeye stopped eating. I was able to save them.

The hawkeye and the female clown have made a full recovery. Brilliant color and eating very well. The tanks numbers are good again. I am still trying to figure out what happened. But I have lost three of my five fish. My snails, crabs, and bristle worms seem unaffected.

This all seemed to go down hill after the introduction of the hawkeye. It wasn't an immediate problem though. We did rush his introduction a bit though.

The gobbies we're awesome. I failed. I have learned. I will not buy more fish until I learn more and probably when I can set up a bigger tank.

last night when i was feeding my fish, i noticed something scary and surprising. On the gravel was one of my yo-yo loache's tail just laying there. I have no idea what happened because the loach was one of the bigest fish in the tank. But, whatever happened, i have lost one of my most energetic and fun to watch fishes. R.I.P little fishy

This is not a report of death but I am scared, before he died, my pleco placki mauled one of my red zebra danios and ripped his gill. He is surviving fine but has a small problem swimming. He swimms in a torpedo swimming fashion but can still eat. His gill is torn so it points outward. I woke up in the morning to find this poor guy lodged in two peices of plastic plant.

HOW CAN I KEEP HIM SAFE???

Zippy my yellow labido died 2 days ago!! He is the only yellow lab to survive from the original batch I got 3 years ago. Now the 2 females i got for him are alone. I will miss Zippy even though all he would do is sit in his ship decoration all day.

my friend who was a senior in high school last year gave me his last fish, a swordtail named diablo, to look after since he wouldn't be able to care for it. the fish was 4 years old in april of last year, so its like 4.5 years old now. pretty old for a swordtail missing one of his pectoral fins.
but, as i type this, he is laying on the bottom of my tank, breathing slower and slower... im afraid i wont find him in the morning because the plecs may eat him overnight.

Getting Started

As a relativley new member of the hobby, I know now how much I don't know.

This past summer, my son and I went to the local fair where he was bound and determined he would win a fish. He had never had a pet before and I wasn't sure why he wanted a fish now, but once his little mind is set, so be it. I figured this could be something fun we could do together and was happy to let him try. Sure enough, he won a goldfish.

The next morning I went out to the local Big Box retailer and found (what I thought was) a nice instant set up. A 1.5 gallon cube complete with filter, air pump, some fake plants, and a dash of water conditioner and food. We took the cube, dropped the $20 at the register and went home to give our fish his new home.

Everything went well during week one. On week two we saw the water getting cloudy. Then the fish started to get "fuzzy". A few days later his fins had all rotted and ripped apart. By the morning of the last day of week 2 we had a dead fish floating atop some rather milky looking water.

In a heap of tears my son threw himself around me and said that he NEEDED to get a new fish. Our house NEEDED a new fish.

So, off to the pet store we went. At this point I realized exactly how over our heads we had gotten ourselves. Every goldfish in the store was bigger than our little cube could fit. All of the "other" fish needed warmer water, more space, some were compatible, others not so much. And after speaking to a very helpful employee I had come to realize that goldfish are notoriously hard to keep in small environments due to the large amounts of "output" they create.

So we bought a nice 10 gal started tank, all the necessary filters, pumps, heaters, gravel, and decor and headed home (without a fish). My son didn't really understand why we had a tank with no fish, but at least he wasn't crying anymore.

A week later we head back to the pet store and picked up a pair of Mollies. 2 weeks later one was a floater and I quickly hightailed it back to the store to get a replacement before my son had noticed.

About 2 weeks after that the "original" molly was found stuck to the intake pipe for our water filter and after nudging him loose with the net I realized he had passed too.

Went back to the store with the fish and some water and was THEN told about all the chemicals and water tests I needed to use to make sure that things went well before I added anymore fish. I bag full of test strips and chemicals later, we were back home and trying desperately to keep the Molly alive.

Since then we have added a pair of Balloon Mollies (both of which have passed, one due to bullying, the other due to Ich that wasn't treated fast enough), a pair of Sunset Fire wagtail Platy (one is a very hearty trooper, the other ... not so much), a Swordtail (my personal favorite), a pictus Catfish (who bullied everyone for his 1st 2 days causing quite a scare but has since calmed down and keeps to himself), and a pair of otocinclus (but we plan on adding a 3-4 more to round out the school while we are prepping a larger tank).

All in all we had 8 fish deaths in the first 2 months we had a tank. Not a stellar track record to be sure. I blame some of it on sales people that only gave me the information after the damage had been done and some of it on me for not doing enough legwork before getting started.

Now, though, everyone is happy and healthy and we have all the tools and chemicals needed to keep them that way (plus a few extras as well).

Hopefully our next fish death won't be for a while and will be due to nothing but old age.

I never thought I'd be putting this here! GAAHHH...... Eeli. We were all ready to rehome him and call the petstore and see if they'd take him, and were talking about it when i found him dead. poor eeli. sighs. I think it had to do with a worm he ate. he ate it then he coughed it up again and then, lik 24 hours later, boom. Anyways, I still hope to get a smallish setup working, but i feel horrible this had to happen to him because of me.

It pains me that my first topic back has to be in the RIP section, but here goes. While I was away, one of my beloved kissing gouramis of nine years passed away. Death is undetermined, as there were no outward signs of disease or injury-it at least died peacefully. This kissing gourami has been a constant presence in the tank since I was a toddler-I can barely remember a time without the duo, though I still remember that long ago journey to the fish store so many years ago. Goodbye, gourami-the years that I knew you were far too short, and even a thousand would not be enough with you.

My poor betta just passed. I had almost had him a year and he had the best life a betta could want, a big tank and plenty of good food. The problem with bettas is each one is of an unique coloration and character and they are impossible to replace.

His life with me began one day when I saw him at walmart in a small cup with hardly any water in it. He was the prettiest betta I had ever seen and couldn't let him be doomed to life in the inexperianced hand of some one else. After begging my mom I walked out of the store with a new betta and friend. His first couple months with me he had to live in a large vase because I didn't have a spare tank but I kept of his tank really good and he was always building bubble nest. I got a new 20 gallon tank and after getting it set up good moved him over to it as my center piece fish. He was the only fish for awhile and loved it! He would let me pet him and would jump out the water for my fingers. After being in this tank awhile he had a mild case of fin rot and whatever I did to fix it only made it worse and all his fins ended up being 1/2-3/4 gone. This just broke my heart but at long last it started improving and was almost healed completely (fins take a looong time to grow out again) until now. Sometime yesterday he became lethargic and this evening he died of an unknown cause. RIP Curly you were the best betta.

yesterday my severum ( fugitive) was killed by my bigger cichlids and now i need a new cichlid so can you ( the person reading this ) look at my jaguar vs red devil in general fw and tell me what you think or put down suggestions on what aggressine s.a. cichlid i could put in.

death by heat

For the last week I had an average death toll of one fish per every two days. First my swordtails started to die, yesterday I found one of my platys floating. The scorching temperatures heat up my place to almost 30 C and my tank (29g) is at about 28.5C during the day and doesn't cool down much at night. Usually I have about 25C in my tank. I somewhat can understand the Platy to die from heat as they don't like it much warmer than 25C, but I thought the swordtails could handle a little more.
I tried cooling with ice cubes, but they melted like butter in a pan. If the forecast is right, there won't be any relief soon. I am thinking of doing small daily water changes to bring the temperature down, but don't want to shock my fish either.
Any advise?
