I would first ask yourself what you want to do with your tank fish only, reef, etc.
I would regardless get these things.
-under gravel filter
-heater
-25 to 35 pounds of live rock
-20 pounds of live sand
- (of course) salt
-a nice lid with built in lights T8 most likely
also you will need to cycle your tank so I would use a grouper to cycle your tank you can either keep or return the fish to your pet store ( though if you are going to return it you should only pay them money if the fish dies)
after the tank is fully cycled you can add whatever you want. Though I would wait six months before fully stocking the tank.
hope it was helpful

RE: Considering a Salt Water Aquarium

The first thing i would suggest is a setup with a sump. This way if you start off with a FOWLR (fish only with live rock), it's easier to switch to a reef later.

I would also suggest the use of a Bean Animal overflow for the display tank. You can easily find information about it online. The reason i suggest it, is due to it having 2 redundant overflow pipes (3 total), which allows you some peace of mind that the display tank will never overflow and flood your floor.

Reef central and Canreef are two websites i frequent alot for info.

Considering a Salt Water Aquarium

I currently have a 125 Gallon Freshwater Discus tank. I do pretty well with everything to do with freshwater and I've been in the hobby for several years.

I'm somewhat considering a salt water aquarium, probably a 29-55 gallon. I don't want to do super small for obvious reasons. I think a 55 gallon would be ideal.

Can anyone give me any suggestions, advice, reading material or any ideas or experiences.

With salt water, I will have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.

Thank you so much!

Brandon
