| The blue tang was wrapped around my filter this morning and seems to be not eating and now is laying on the bottom of the tank. It's still breathing and occasionally moves around, but looks very sickly. It also has a couple white splotches on its underside, but I don't believe it to be marine ich. I am enclosing a picture of the fish. I have removed it from the tank and have fed it some mysis shrimp which it ate and then went back on its side.....

ooooh, that poor thing. It's beautiful too.
I don't much of anything about saltwater. Hopefully, some of the saltwater people will be around today. We have more freshwater than saltwater. I really hope you find some advice on here that works. That is a beautiful fish.

Your Blue Tang has Head and Lateral Line disease. I know because I was losing 3 tangs to this awful disease that just eats holes in their skin, starting at the head. What we did was get a lighting system that would grow beneficial green algae for them to eat. A 120 g tank with Compact Flourescent lighting wasn't doing the job. This is a fish only with live rock tank. We replaced the CF with a hood containing 2-150 w Metal Halide and 4 Actinic blue lights and also lunar. The Metal Halides are the ones that grow the algae. Tangs are mostly Herbivores who require a lot of greens in their diet. While I was waiting for the algae to grow I fed them organic Romaine lettuce daily and added vitamins that contained Vitamin C. They are doing alot better now but the scars still remain. Don't know if they will ever go away. I still feed them Romaine lettuce as a treat. Can't be too safe! Good luck!

I don't know what went wrong with previous e-mail. Your tang needs a lot more greens. Feed him organic green Romaine lettuce and vitamins with Vit C daily. Metal Halide lighting will help the good green algae to grow in your tank, which is what he basically needs. Good luck!

It could be a number of things...not so sure about HLLE myself without more info. I have some questions that will help get to the bottom of it. Please answer as many as you can.
What size tank is it in?
What does it have for tankmates?
What are your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and specific gravity readings? (these are very important, and please provide them in numbers, not verbal answers like "ammonia is fine")
How long has the tank been set up?
How long has the tang been in there?

Just thought I'd point out that this thread was started 3-25-07. Doesn't make the information any less valuable, but I imagine that either the problem has already been solved or the fish in question has gone the way of the dinosaur. (Most likely the latter sorry to say)
