I have (my mom's) three fantails, and right now they are temporarily in a 10g tank because my mom is moving. She also wants to get two black moors and I told her, "I gotta buy you a 36g tank at least."
My mom:
Anyway...my best friend had asked me a question: "Can I keep my goldfish with tropical fish."
I just wanted to make a point that I don't advise anyone to keep goldfish with tropical fish at all. Two main points on this matter:
1) Goldfish are cold water fish. They don't do well in the higher temperature ranges (80f and above) for long sustained time periods. That could be fatal to them. Room temperature is adequate for these beautiful fish.
2) Goldfish are in the carp family...and they put out a LOT of waste. The amount of waste these fish put out can kill a lot of tropical fish quickly. And also like carp, goldfish can tolerate much more harsher conditions as compared to tropical fish.
I just wanted to voice these two points. If I am incorrect, or if I omitted any information by accident. Please drop it under this post!

are you talking about a 36g for just the two black moors or for all five fish together? Because if you're talking about all five goldfish, you'll need more like a 55-60g tank to properly house them.
About the rest, you are absolutely correct.
55 gallon
Black Moor - Damian
Calico Ryukin - Serafina
midget lionhead - Kiko
Lionhead - Little Bean
Serafina and Bean's babies:
Baby
Westie
planted 29 gallon
2 german rams m/f
5 cardinal tetras
4 albino cories
9 baby guppies

You are correct. Also, tropicals and coolwater fish have different slime coats. What a goldfish carries harmlessly may wipe out a tank full of tropical in no time (and vice versa).
And as for tank size, I'm with Princessotfu.

you are COMPLETELY correct on both situations, good. so some people say 10 gallons per goldfish but that is really following the 1 inch per gallon but goldies really need 2 in per gallon. just wanted to make a point of that.
10 gal: 2 black kuhli loaches,1 oto, 2 bettas, 1 least killi, 5 young female guppies, 4 young flagfish 10 gal: flagfish fry 20 gal: 2 pearl gouramis, 1 bumblebee catfish, 1 farlowella "twig" cat, 7 cherry barbs, 1 red was platy, 1 swordtail, 2 bettas. 5 gal: 4 celestial pearl danios, 1 nerite snail, 3 young flagfish, 1 young male guppy. 2.5 gal: 2 bettas 29 gal: 1 sailfin molly, 1 green molly, 2 swamp darters, 2 sunfish, 3 flagfish Pond: 2 goldfish, some sunfish, some flagfish XP Container Pond (20g): currently empty

lilcherna (8/31/2007) you are COMPLETELY correct on both situations, good. so some people say 10 gallons per goldfish but that is really following the 1 inch per gallon but goldies really need 2 in per gallon. just wanted to make a point of that. I'm not quite sure I understand this logic. How is 10 gallons per goldfish following the 1 gallon per inch rule? And what size is this goldfish in the 10 gallon tank, 1 inch, two inches, three, ten?

| Ok Im going to get stoned here *looks for cover. I've kept Goldfish (Ryukins) w/ Angels for years. I keep the tank at a "Nice" 70 degrees and the PH around a high 7.8 ( I use baking soda. Sorry for showing my age lol ) The Goldfish keep the Angel breeding down to a few babies at a time. Until I want a full brood them I put the Angel parents in another tank. As for the Extrea bio load I use a Large Boiwheel and 1 Canaster filter and do water changes every 2 weeks. Love my phython !! I haven't lost an "Adult" fish in sometime. And I add "greens" about once a week to the tank.

It can be done, but it presents a number of risks that outweigh the benefits. Just keeping a separate tank of adequate size for the goldfish is the best way to go.

I agree with you Hailey...the risk is more than the reward in that case. I prefer to keep goldfish separate from tropical fish.
Oh and on another note...two snails popped into the goldfish tank last week, so I left them to help keep the algae under control. But I came back yesterday and I saw empty shells. I feed goldfish twice a day with flakes and once to twice a week with bloodworms (they love them). But I didn't know that goldfish actually ate snails...
I guess they wanted a midnight snack...on the half-shell.

goldfish food rules:
1. I will eat all the food as fast as possible, regardless of the effects of gulping large air bubbles.
2. I will stare at you ALL day begging for food. And if you put more in, I will eat it, see #1.
3. If it is small enough to fit in my mouth, I will attempt to eat it.
4. If it is too big for my mouth, I will probably attempt to eat it anyway.
5. If it is exactly the size of my throat, I will continue to keep trying to eat it, no matter how many times it gets stuck.
6. If it is green, I will attempt to eat it.
7. If it has a shell, I will eat the shell too. If I can't, I will find a way to get the food out of the shell.
8. If it has tasty appendages, I will bite them off.
9. If I don't know what it is, I"ll try to eat it, just on the off chance.
10. If I'm not supposed to eat it, I will eat it. Especially if you spent lots of money on it.
