I just bought a rainbow mantis shrimp -- it is one of the coolest animals I have ever seen. Sorta looks like if you took the skin of a mandarin and put it on a shrimp -- independently swivelable (sp?) eyes on stalks, constantly cleaning himself. I broke down my 8 gallon nano-tank that I've had for years on my desk, put in gravel, water and liverock from the 110, and added the shrimp.

My question is how much to feed him and how often. I've been giving him a dead fish every other day or so (unfortunately, down in my wholesale fish room I can pretty much always count on being able to find at least one dead fish).

Thanks for your help.

Stomatopods, never kept one by I've always been intrigued by them. I read somewhere that their smashing attack makes them the fastest animals on earth!!!!

Here's a web site that is a gold mine of mantis shrimp info:

www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthropoda/crustacea/malacostraca/eumalacostraca/royslist/

You should find the answer to your question there.

Does anyone know what ancient invertebrate these animals originate from? After all, contrary to their name, they really are not shrimp!

So many species, so little money!

Can you post a picture David? I'm sure we'd all love to take a look at it!

Thanks for the info. I have heard that it is a tossup between a mantis shrimp and an angler fish in terms of having the fastest movement. Mantis shrimps are called "thumb-splitters" as they can do real damage, apparently. I'm feeding him with a pair of tongs.

This is the only pic I have so far, as he stays pretty much under the coral. I'm sure when he gets used to the tank I'll be able to get a good shot of all of him.
