| If you scroll down these posts you can follow the history of this tank. It was started specifically for a test for my column "In The Fishroom" in FAMA, and it will probably be in the magazine sometime in the next few months. The test of the Red Sea planted tank system for my FAMA column was the original purpose for setting up of the tank, and it worked great. Now I am just playing around to see how it works with no filtration (but with water movement from a HOB filter without media) and 20% water changes every two days or so. So far so good. The key to the tank, IMHO, is the Red Sea substrate, and the Hagen GLO T5 lighting fixture. Lites are on for 11 hours a day, and I had to play around with the height the Hagen fixture was above the tank (which it is very easy to adjust with the GLO T5 fixture).

| I looked right past the substrate answer. Part of your first post runs off the posting. thanks for clearing that up. I like the idea of cutting costs and consuming of resources such as constantly adding more power. It makes the tank greener in more ways than one.

| The tank has now been running without a filter for over 3 weeks. HOB filter is running for water movement only, no cartridges. The plants and fish are all doing really well. The Amazon swordplant has 3 plantlets growing along the flower stem.

| Thats great, I have been following your progress and it has helped with my project. The 3 goldfish are in their pond, now I can start my plantings. Your using a hob filter just for water movement, do you think strategically placed bubblers could work.

Sure, airstones will workm fine. I just had the HOB filter in place, and simply removed the filter cartridges.

| Just an update -- here is the 20 gallon tank 3 weeks later. Still no filter, and for two weeks the water changes were only once a week. All the fish are fine, and when it comes to the plants, they are thriving. The Amazon sword plant that sent out the runner has one baby at the top of the water that almost has the roots down to the gravel. When this happens, they "pull" the baby plant down, Should be in the next few weeks.

Amazing! How much pruning do you do? What is an HOB filter? Could you use a regular mechanicle filter without the cartridges for water movement?

Tank's looking awesome, David. It's amazing how well plants grow with the right conditions.
Two of the big amazon swords I bought before I left town each had 2-3 small baby plants growing on them as well. They were sending down roots when I left, but the tallest one was a good 16 inches above the sand, so it probably took a while to reach bottom
Look forward to seeing future pictures and hearing about the continued success with the tank!
