Intresting. So could you provide different caves in different parts of the tank? What about electric yellow cichlids. According to my book they are very peacful. Would it be possible to mix these cichlids with similar sized territorial cichlids like kribs?

| ok, today is the day. i'm going to tear down my saltwater tank and sellback the live rock and live stock to the lfs. they give store credit of 1/2 value for the live rock and 1/3 for live stock. that should take care of buying the new rock and get things started with the fish (after, or course i cycle it). got my new pc's yesterday. going to load up on vinegar. will start soaking the power heads, heaters, filters to remove the calcium build up. i've decided(for now) to stay with the sand bottom. i know it wont be easy to clean, but, i'm going to try it anyway. i checked on the rock options for the cichlids and have an idea of what i'm going to do with that. so, arrivederci saltwater!

| full day today. housework, yardwork, then, aquarium work. removed liverock and fish, returned to lfs. generous settlement, more than i thought it would be. should be more than enough to handle the expense of the cichlids. just finished rinsing sand. left in tub on patio, we'll see how it looks tomorrow, after it has a chance to settle. i think it's pretty clean, hardly any foam by the time i finished rinsing it. tomorrow, going to get a load of vinegar (4 or 5 gallons) and soak the pumps and filter. will also scrape the glass and finish getting ALL the old water and sand out. not much of that left though. just a few puddles here and there. i'm guessing should be refilled by next weekend. will go back to lfs next weekend for the new rock, and maybe pick up a couple of fish to help cycle. this is definitely an adventure. i'm pretty excited to see the final product. i somehow even managed a few minutes of downtime on the patio drinking a little wine and reading a new (fish) book. i'm shot, a little tv, then, to bed!

No way...they would absolutely murder kribs and other small, peaceful cichlids. They also have totally different water requirements (africans like very alkaline, basic, hard water compared to other freshwater fish). African cichlids are best kept (in general, though there are a few exceptions) only with other african cichlids, and even more specifically, mbuna with mbuna only, and peacocks, haps, and other meat eaters only with other meat eaters. They can run into serious dietary induced "diseases" like bloat, which is often fatal.

jberta1030 (5/17/2008) will go back to lfs next weekend for the new rock, and maybe pick up a couple of fish to help cycle.
Do not add fish to this tank before it is fully cycled. Usually fishless cycling is merely and option (a good one, but still an option), but with you keeping sand from the saltwater tank which may have massive die-off of microscopic organisms or release a ton of salt into the water, putting fish in there before the tank is fully cycled and has been tested repeatedly to ensure that ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and salt levels are all acceptable is a recipe for disaster. The sand needs to cure as if you are setting up a new saltwater tank with sand dredged from the bottom of the sea.

| maybe i was a little ambitious in my timeframe for getting the tank re-filled. maybe it'll actually be the next weekend, not this coming. i have ALOT of clean up to do in the tank. that will require alot of vinegar and scraping and making sure it's completely clean before the sand goes back in. the sand is currently soaking in freshwater in a 30 gallon rubbermaid container, as it has been all night and as it will be for the next week or so. i will continue to rinse it with a sprayer nozzle attached to the hose several more times. the water in the tub looked pretty clear this morning. be assured, i have no intentions of rushing this. i will not put the sand back into the aquarium until i'm confident it's free of all the old saltwater organisms. i think i'll leave it alone today and relax a little! my back could use it! hailey, how would you reccommend cycling a 100 gallon tank? it's been a while (5 years) since i've had to cycle a tank. i know you can throw in a couple of fish, or add a pieces of shrimp or even flake food to get it started. which is the method you prefer? thanks so much for your input!

My preferance for cycling has become the shrimp method... 1 large uncooked shrimp per 10 gallons. For a 100 gallons you would get 10 jumbo size raw shrimp. Sticking them inside cheese cloth can make retrieval a bit easier... It takes around 6 weeks to cycle but you dont need to test much or add anything untill the cycle is ready unless the shrimp need to be replaced. The day before you bring home your live stock a large water change is all you have to deal with. It is simple, easy and almost fool proof.
