They would almost certainly be eaten by discus and rams any larger than about 1 1/2 inches. Their max size is only about 1/2 inch and they spend a lot of their lives much smaller than that.

If you have a densely planted tank, or something with a LOT of places for them to hide, you might be able to get an established colony.
20 gallon long
Lionhead - Kiko
Calico Lionhead - Little Bean
29 gallon
Fantail - Oliver
Black Moor - Damian
Calico Ryukin - Serafina
2.5 gallon
male betta - Pirate
10 gallon planted
minnow, betta, guppy

Hmmm... I should wait until my plants start to spread if that's the case. I have alot of plants in both of my tanks but most of them wouldn't make ideal cover from a hungry ram or discus. Thank you both for your input. Oh.. one more question would water temps of up to 86F pose a problem for RCS?

The only way I have been able to keep a colony going is to keep them in the 12 gallon All-In-One tank on my desk, and to keep just shrimps and a bunch of Galaxy Rasboras/Celestial Pearl Danios. I keep them just at room temperature, and I don't think they would be happy at discus or ram temps, but that's just my instinct, not experience talking.

That is pretty warm, but they may be alright. I've never kept them in water that warm so I'm not sure.
As for keeping an established colony by having lots of plants, you may be able to. There are three main requirements for that to happen with predators in the tank though. One is that you need lots of dense, fine leaved plants like java moss for them to hide in. You would also need a large colony so that lots of breeding is going on. I would buy as many as you can afford, and then breed them in a separate tank alone until you have hundreds (doesn't take as long as it might sound because they breed like rabbits) before introducing them to the display tank. And along the lines of the last suggestion, make sure you have plenty of both males and females. The females are the pretty red ones, so a lot of stores may only carry those.

I was planning on buying 40 of them. Would a 5 gallon tank be alright for 40 of them? even if they are not compatible in my tanks I can always sell them off.

A 5g would be fine for 40. Boy, that is a lot of $$$ though. They sell (around here at least) for $3-$5 each. You might want to start with more like ten and let them breed (cover the filter intake so the fry don't get sucked in though).
