They're not a cross of anything, so much as regular zebra danios injected with a gene from (I think) a jellyfish, an anemenoe, or a coral to make them red/pink, yellow, or green. Andthey glows under a black light. Ooooh alien fishies. Unlike dyed/painted fish, their color does not wear off, and they can pass the gene on to the next generation. And they glow under a black light. Ooooh alien fishies.

I'd hate to say it, but I think I may have been utterly out-smarted by a fish.

Yeah.  Glofish started out life as Zebra Danio eggs, but the eggs were injected with a jellyfish gene to make them glow.

Yes -- they are "genetically modified (GM)" fish with a cnidarian gene spliced into them to make them the different colors. They were originally "invented" by some guy in Singapore and the fish changed color in the presence of some toxic compounds in water; with Singapore being one of the major tropical fish breeding places in the world, they came into the hobby. While I am really against painted, dyed or tatooed fish, I don't really have a problem with the glofish, other than the fact that I personally don't like them. When you really think about it, how are these guys any different from guppies or bettas where we have modified their genes by selective breeding. One other thing about them, I was told that unlike other fish where their colors come out on darker gravel, the glofish get more colorful on white or light colored gravel. Something about the color being a mild stress response, and it being more on light gravel.

in that case what happens if you breed two different colors of glofish?

I am not an expert in genetics but i would think that you might get a mix but i think the colors would be varied but that is just my best guess.  I like the way they look but they are a little expenssive for me.

The price varies dramatically. My lfs charges $7.99 each, but a chain store down the road has them for $4.99. I'd say $2.99 is a really good deal, if they are of high quality. I have seen some that are brightly colored with none of the original zebra danio blue stripes, but others I've seen have been really disappointing (basically just a zebra danio, blue sripes and all, with a pink, orange, or green undertone in between the stripes). I think that in some the Cnidarian gene may just not be expressed as well.
