| Ever checked the prices on "Fake" plants at a petstore? Some prices could be $10.00 for 1-3 medium size plants. Idea came from my mother, who at one time ran the Pet Department at Woolworth back when I was a kid. She used fake plants from the Floral Dept., at WalMart. I purchased a 55gal tanks worth of Fake Plants from the Floral Section for about $20.00. I rinsed them in a salted water and placed them through out the tank. The only down fall, you have to secure them good or they'll float away. My tank is clear and the fish love it. (See Scooter's 55gal). The best part, if the "plants" get too much algae or fray, I will go buy more to replace b/c it doesn't cost that much. So if you are wanting that "real" planted tank look, try some of the "fake" plants in the Floral dept at your Hobby/Craft store.

wow, that is a really good idea. I just have a small 2.5gallon tank at the moment for my betta but if or when I ever get a bigger tank I am definitely gonna look into this idea

Be very careful doing this. It can work, but the dyes in the plants can leech and there are often metal wires inside the stems that are toxic if the plastic coating comes off and they begin to corrode. Personally, I would not take the risk. My answer to expensive fake aquarium plants is to buy real ones. If you buy low light plants like java ferns, java moss, anubias, crypts, etc, you don't need to upgrade fro standard lighting or do anything special to keep them alive (like fertilizing, etc), and they are good for the fish. The bonus is that on average they cost the same amount or less than fake plants, and many will reproduce on their own so you can start with less and let them fill up your tank.

I have to say, fake plants are a little costly  but they can really make your tank look artistic if you put them in the right places.
