Back onto the topic, I completely support permits on advanced exotic fish. Too many did each year because of irresponsible ownership.

I don't think there should be permits to keep the big three, but I totally agree with that they should never be kept by anyone without a huge tank. Also, it would be great if the RFI could also encourage tank-bred fish as opposed to wild caught, especially in the case of Banggai Cardinalfish. Another thing that RFI should look into is Injected or dyed fish. It makes me sick to think of people doing that to a fish, and I don't know what sort of person would think they look pretty if they knew what had been done to them (I don't think they look pretty anyway, and I'm sure a good number of people agree with me). It would be great if you guys could help spread awareness on this issue. My local fish store seems to believe that tattooing is harmless.

David,

I too agree with bans on certain fish and or special permits required to own the big three.  However, to ban a particuliar family that would includ Tetra's, perhaps is an extreme.  Please don't take me wrong, but to me while many palnts and freshwater fishes can harm envirornments in many states, I dont believe the Tetra's would be one of them.  On the defence side nor have I fully researcded what the different Tetra's could do to the envirenment if released in to warm waters.

But otherwise I fully support the idea of resrictive permet requirements and banns on all pirannha, except research and zooalogical facilities.

My mind always tells me I'm young.......yet every morning when I get out of bed.......my body proves I'm very very old!

I love the idea of permits for certain fish. I think it would cut down on the abuse of these animals. It's sad to think that a lot of fish are doomed to a horrible tank existence

That's the problem with creating a "ban" list and a "permit" list and an "okay" list. Everyone has a different idea of what should be on what list. I guarantee you that the aquarists over at Monsterfishkeepers will have a vastly different idea of who can and cannot keep some of the fish we just mentioned.
The point is, there exists a portion of the population that can keep these fish responsibly. It is not fair to institute a permit process for them, so that they have the headache and expense of that in addition to the fish themselves, when we can just go our carefree way and own goldfish - which cause havoc in lakes all over the northern US.

I would rather see a nationwide effort toward education than institute a permit process. Other groups have already been incredibly successful in that sort of thing about other issues. I see that as infinitely more effective, without penalizing the people who are already acting responsibly.

55 gallon
Little Bean - lionhead
Baby - lionhead/ryukin cross
Westie - lionhead/ryukin cross
Speedy Rodriguez - oranda

planted 29 gallon
6 red eye tetras
6 cherry barbs
2 cardinal tetras
4 neon tetras
8 albino cories
3 male guppies

I am new to this site and just happened upon this post. I find parts of it sensible in some ways. I think that instituting permit policies is not the answer on any species of fish. As a person that both has and loves large fish ( two of your listed three included) I think that it is unfair for people who are content with their fish of choice to make it any more difficult for those of us that are not guppy farmers. I think a more logical approach to start with would be making sure that the fish stores take more time educating their employees. They are the ones most people rely on for suggestions and information on fish. Half of the ones I have encountered don't have the slightest clue what they are selling people. I think maybe making up booklets on fish that are difficult to care for because of size or other reasons informing potential buyers of the facts be made available at any store dealing with any of those species. I think one of the problems is that too many permits and regulations are put in place like band-aids to hide or cover up problems when in fact they do very little to fix them. In reality they only strip legitimate people of rights.

I fish the waters that have been affected by species of fish that have seriously affected natural populations of fish in the Potomac River and I have caught too many of them.  Snakeheads are becoming more and more a problem that will soon spread to near everywhere.

If preventing something to this level potentially could have been prevented by tighter control and it meant that I had to give up fish like Neons or Cards I would just simply ask, "what time do you want to come and pick them up?"  There is no fish that I couldn't do without when there are so many that are available that don't pose serious threats to systems as large as the Potomac.  I would argue very little over any of it as long as I had a few I was happy with.
