When i first got my 38g fw tank, it came with a Whisper30 hang-on-the-back filter.  Obviously this was inadequate, as i have a tendency to overstock all my aquariums.  So, i had the Whisper30 for a year or so, and the i got my baby royal pleco.  3 days after i got the royal pleco, i found my filter cartrige to be clogged with wood shavings and pleco poop.

Later that year for my birthday, i got an Aquaclear110 hang-on-the-back filter.  This filter was and is awesome and it filters 500 gph!  that turns my tank over about 13 times every hour!  It has 3 stages in it: a sponge thing for mechanical filtration, a bag of carbon for chemical filtration, and 2 bags of small porous cylindrical rocks, for biological filtration.  These 3 stages are changed in cycles: one month the sponge is changed, the next month the carbon is changed, the next month the rocks are changed, and the next moth the sponge is changed, and so-on.

This filter keeps my tank very clean, and i recommend it for anyone with overstocked tanks, and anyone with fish than produce a lot of waste.

I hate to break it to you but its just like the other filters they dont need replaced as often as the lfs says.............I have 2 aquaclears and I have had them for uhm 8mths and have never replaced anything in them.

You only replace them when they are no longer functioning properly and even then you give them a good rinse in old tank water in a bucket first to see if that works.

well, with the driftwood and large amount of fish in the tank, the water can get a bit yellow, so i change the carbon a lot... but ill change the other stuff less, then.

Pleco: I own many A.C. 500(new 110) and have never ever replaced a sponge or Bio in any of them, most of the time I just use 2 sponges in them (2 fit perfectly) Take the top sponge move it down to the bottom, wash the bottom sponge and move it to the top. If you use carbon buy in bulk and put it in a net bag or stockings, its a lot cheaper that way. And stop replacing sponges and Bio on these filters, that is the beauty of the A.C.

huh.  Well, i got like 9 months worth of new filter carbon bags, rock bags, and sponges, so ill use them according to the 3month cycle, then ill stop changing the sponges and bio, and keep changing the carbon.

Just send me all your old stuff, I'll "dispose" of it for you.

I use an aquaclear filter as well (70). Sweet filter. I don't use carbon ever, although I have it just in case. I just use a sponge, two large bio-media bags, and two small ones. I have had the filter 1 year or more and haven't needed to replace anything yet.
