I've read good reviews from hobbyists with large tanks who have very positive experience with this filter, its one of the best out there for larger aquariums.

I reviewed the FX5 for my monthly FAMA column "In The Fishroom", and I really like the filter. I have them on three tanks, including my 300 gallon display tank. You can control the flow rate very easily, although I have always run my full bore.

I have had the FX-5 running on my 150 gal for 3 years, there are not enough good things I can say. Water quaility and clarity are excellent. Upkeep is minimal, requiring little effort every 3 months to change the carbon and rinse the foam and bio-filtration. My tank is heavily stocked with 6 Bala Sharks, 10-12 inches each and 6 Clown Loaches 6-8 inches in size. I do 50% water changes weekly.

I just picked up a FX5 filter a few months ago for my 120 gallon build. I have not used it yet. Every one I spoke to loves this filter alot. I would go for it. It would be great for your size aquarium.

I thought long and hard about getting this filter for my 100 gallon Discus tank. I didn't for reasons unrelated to the quality of the filter. I didn't want to have a single point of failure for my filtration. I ended up with a Fluval 305 and a Rena Filstar XP2. Going smaller also helped to reduce the current in the tank (discus need still water).
Both are great filters. The XP2 needs to be cleaned more often, has a compatible heater that replaces the intake tube and included a spray bar exhaust. The 305 I've cleaned once in a year, I had to buy the spray bar, has an available surface skimmer and is easier to prime.
Fluval makes great stuff. If I had to do it again, I would get two of the XP2s. I didn't have to buy the spray bar and I love the heaters. It makes a dramatic difference to have one less thing stuck on the back wall. It could just be me, but they seem to work better than a normal heater.
