Interesting article... I liked it! I think it would be cool to try... I have said that about things before... And proved to be NOT bennificial... I'm just going to continue with the old school way... Its what I know... And is more natural...
I don't like having to put chemicals into my aquariums unless I have to... In this case i don't have to... I just let nature runs its course; graaaaaaadually... Not dumping manufactured ammonia into my aquarium till I have a reading...
And if people are trying to shorten the cycle time... Why not start by cycling your filter in an existing aquarium first... I ran my 405 for 2 months in my 27 gal before putting it in my 56 gal... I ran it for 2 days in the 56 gal before the cycle started in the aquarium water... By the end of the week... My water was clear... Did my weekly water change and my water was crystal clear and fish were happy

| Interesting, but it I don't like the Idea of dumping chemicals into my aquarium. I guess it would work but it don't like the idea. And what would happen if some accidentally used a scented amonia? What effects would that have? I know a lot of people won't like it but I still like to cycle my aquariums with fish. I don't see the difference between usng fish or food (fish or shrip as indicated in the article) to start the cycle. Any piece of fish or shrimp you use as food to cycle your aquarium was either grown or caught to be food. So if you use a live fish at least it has a chance to survive. Just my thoughts. But maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way

tribefan (3/31/2012) Interesting, but it I don't like the Idea of dumping chemicals into my aquarium.
The chemical used, ammonia, is what is already present in your tank until the bacteria process it. There is no difference whatsoever between the unscented pure ammonia sold for cleaning and the ammonia released by your fish as waste products. They are the same thing.

Westie - lionhead/ryukin cross
Speedy Rodriguez - oranda
