Rick,
I wish could give you some first hand advice, but I have always been a hob user.
The newer ehiems are typically self priming and have medium baskets to make cleaning easier. That is all I have to give.

Im in the same boat as I havent used those types myself either.....I have however used the Rena Filstar Xp4 which I tore down tonight matter of fact after several attempts to get it to work properly Im giving up on it.
And just yesterday bought some large Penguin Bio Wheels which I have always had good luck with on my larger tanks......I know this doesnt answer your question Rick but just chiming in with my usual 2 cents lol......Jas

Rick I use Ehiem HOB filters on all 7 of my tanks and all 6 of my girlfreinds tanks, never had any problems. If their canisters work as good as their HOB then they would be good filters.I have never heard anyone complain about the Ehiem line.

I have used the Eheim Classic for some year now but had never used Eheim ECCO
there is almost a 100 bucks difference in price but in the end I ended up with an Eheim Classic 2260. I know these filters and went with what I knew

I use the Eheim 2215 and 2217 canisters on mine as well as hob's on each one. They are great and I have never had a single complaint about them and I have had them for years so they do last. I know someone who uses one of the eheim proffesional series and loves it also. Eheim makes good stuff.

I have used several types of canisters filters. Each one was junk. I love using the Aquaclear filters. They have yet to fail me. To me they are the best filter out there.

| I have a 2217, 2213 and 2211. All work great and are so quiet. Also think that Aquaclear are the best HOB.

I have never owned a canister filter. Primarily due to cost, I have always used HOB filter. The Emperor 400 is an excellent HOB
