So i finally bought another 55 gallon quarintine tank to treat my yellowand blue tang for ich. i bought some copper to treat the fish it is called copper power. i filled up the 55 galon quarintine tank with water from my original tank( all levels are perfect), added some live rock(actually it has been out of my tank for weeks) to give them places to hide, threw in an air pump, and threw the amount of copper needed.

Am i doing this wright? is there anything else i should be doing? thx

Just out of curiosity, you said the live rock had been out of your tank for weeks? Did you clean it?

You're not putting that rock back in a tank anytime are you? Once the copper gets in it you can never have it in a saltwater tank with invertebrates again.

I haven't seen the rock, so I'm just saying this as a caution....the "live" rock is now dead, and since you didn't clean it, everything that was live is also now dead, so essentially you just put a whole bunch of waste material into your q tank. Then you added fish as well as the "dead" rock, so your filter might be overwhelmed pretty quickly. I hope that's not the case, but it seems to be possible.

Most people use a bare q tank, especially when treating ich since the life cycle involves a dormant cyst component. You can actually help "treat" the ich by removing cysts via a water change, much easier to do in a bare tank. Add something like a cheap plastic pot on it's side for a hiding place, if you really need something.

I am pretty new here and this is my first post, but I'd like to contribute, if I may, to this thread. Tangs are some of my favorite fish.

I have three thoughts:

Some tangs are averse to copper and are better treated with formalin, if at all. I don't know of your tangs fall into this group or not. I don't have enough information.

"A fish that eats is a fish that lives." Feed the sick fish liberally and offer a varied diet. If they are eating voraciously, they have a great chance of fighting off their attackers through natural processes.

Finally, the parasite afflicting your fish exists in many, if not most, tanks. If the fish didn't show extreme infection, I would have left them untreated where they were. I would not have stressed them further by catching and moving them. What I would have done, if I could, was make sure that they were not being picked on by other fish and they they had plenty and varied food throughout the day, including grazing food; live or dried algae in a clip.

I hope this is helpful. Best wishes to you and the tangs.

Jeff

Most time ich can be treated with an elevated temp in the tank. Copper in salt in one of the biggest NO-NO'S that I know and you may have just damaged the old live rock, now the only thing it is good for is a nice lawn ornament. I also thought that a fresh water dip will help with the parasite before putting the fish in a q tank and after removing to release back into main tank. Please correct me if i'm wrong!
