We’d like to give you a chance to share your thoughts and advice with fellow hobbyists in our annual magazine, Aquarium USA. Each week, we’ll post a couple questions you can answer here—and your answer could get published in the next Aquarium USA! Question #4 is:

Fishkeeping is a great hobby. Explain why it is that you are willing to spend tons of time and money on it.

I'm willing to spend my time and money because of a few reasons.

1) It's rewarding to see your hard work flourish.
2) There's so many beautiful fish and plants!
3) It's stress relieving.
4) People finally open up to fish not just being that, a fish but an actual life form.
5) It's an awesome hobby!

Because it feels nice to see that you are in control of helping these animals thrive and be healthy. You love seeing them every day and they are family to us. the snake tongue flick or the goldfish blowing bubbles is that "puppy dog face" to the other non-small pet keepers. We know our pets and we love them. We want, almost need them to be healthy.

I like seeing the fruits of my efforts be shown as a tankful of healthy, content fish and crisp green plants.

I take pet ownership seriously, even if they are "just fish". Once I've decided to get a certain pet, I believe it is my responsibility to give them the best care I can, or find a home that will if I cannot. So, while I enjoy knowing that my fish are well-cared for, and take pride in their beauty and health, I really do it because that is the duty I have given myself by bringing them home.

I find that keeping fish and a planted tank uses knowledge about chemistry, physics, biology, psychology, engineering, design and math in order to keep a good tank. I love fish keeping b/c it always proposes a new problem for me to solve and it makes me think out-side of the box. It is one of the few pets that is intrinsically beautiful and challenging at the same time. I find the money and the time that I spend on it is quite rewarding.

People will not think twice about spending money for a dog or a cat but will look at me crazy for spending that same kind of money on a fish tank. Why not spend money on something that serves as a decorative design as well as a loving pet?

I have a 55 gal fish, and reef tank, I've had this set up for approx. 2 yrs. now..If you are a hobbyist, that loves your fish and corals like I do, its worth every penny you put out...and the time! I love getting new corals, and new fish..I just recentely added a wet dry system, and its amazing how different my corals are looking! They are flourishing..there's always someway to upgrade, either more, or new lighting, changing your filter system, adding more to your tank, or going larger..I find it relaxing, rewarding, and the chemistry is very interesting..My tank is in my family room, and I can spend hrs. just watching it, and all the  little creatures, that have mysteriously appeared from the live rock..my latest addition has been a beautiful Mystery Wrasse! And my sons friends like it too..

I am spending time and money on my fish keeping hobby because there is an unssen bond between fish and keeper that only a person with aquariums can understand.I find it a symbiotic relation between man and fish.

I enjoy spending my time and money on my fish for several reasons: a) I like to "get to know" my fish, and figure out there personalities, b) observing my fish interact is relaxing to me, c) I like it when friends and relatives come over and are absolutely astounded by my fish and tanks, and d) I love the shape and color varieties of both plants and fish, and aquarium decor. Give me time and I could give you a thousand more reasons!

I dont spend a lot of time or money on my tanks, after such a long time keeping fish in aquariums, ive learned that simple monthly maintenance on my tanks keep them both happy and healthy. When an aquarium is setup and filtered correctly they over time find their own balance, and all that is required is regular water changes, with a gravel vac to remove any accumulated debris or uneaten food. Im sure there will be disagreements with this theory, which is fine, but my proof is, I never lose fish to disease, they are all happy and healthy and that is good enough for me
