You are well on your way to a great looking tank(looked at your pics you should add more) as for your water change you should change around 25% if you can. I recommend making the water a few days before in a container. You should heat it to the temp that is close to your actual tank temp. The red slime algae comes from a water quality that is full of organics that will not be removed by mechanical filters you should get a protein skimmer. That will help to control it somewhat. When you change you mechanical filter rinse it out in you old water that you take from the tank, it takes the bacteria that is required for proper filtration and the activated carbon(not charcoal) will help remove the organics that cause the red slime. Hope this answers some of you questions.

When should I do the water change?

PS: Should I scrape the red algae off the substrate? I'm using a magnetic scraper on the front pane of glass but leaving it to grow wild and mask the other sides. I'm even seeing a few spots of coralline algae

I perform a 10% percent water change on my tank once a week.  The smaller and more frequent the water changes the better the results.  From what I understand you have a 29 gallon tank, the smaller the tank the more crucial water changes can be.  Too much and too often puts alot of stress on your tanks eco system.  The same goes for too little far to often.  It sounds like you may be having a slight problem somewhere if yor seeing red algae.  Test your water and move forward from there with the results.  Most of the time red algae is caused from over feading or too much light.  I wouldn't run your lighting for more then 8 hours a day at this time and I would also do a series of water chages over the next two weeks.  Maybe 20% every 2-3 days for the next couple of weeks.  Good Luck.

This is a brand spanking new tank, as you know. My LFS told me that a bit of red algae was normal at this stage in the game. I'm at my mother's house but since it's March Break here I'll try to arrange to go to my father's (where my tanks are) to do some maintenance. I'll ask him to cut back on the feeding as well.

I'll ask my father if he can turn off the lights earlier. I turn them off when i go to sleep, which is earlier than he does.

One of the clownfish is a bit larger than the other and is bossier. I think that this one is probably the female-I know which one is Hana and which one is Kaio now.
