Got a question about my tank. Came back from the Philippines about 10 days ago and noticed my water was cloudy in my main tank. Fish were fine, and all water tests checked out. (0 Amm, 0 Phos, 0 Nitrites and 20 nitrates, 8.3 pH) Did a 25% water change a few days ago and added some coppersafe to the tank because my clown trigger has started getting ich recently. All the other fish are fine but i still have the cloudiness in the water. New filter sponges, no carbon (because of the coppersafe) and old biological filters. Any ideas what could be causing the cloudy waters? Could it just be algae blooms or something, and in that case, maybe add some algaefix? Advice would be welcome, thanks guys

Hey, Your cloudy water could be caused by a couple of things:-

1- You added more substrate to your tank but I don't think that is the problem or,

2- you may have an out break of copepod or amphipod suspended in the water collum with can be removed by filtration or getting a fish that enjoys them for lunch. Mandarine fish. Draw back is they are hard to keep. clean out the uneaten food because they thrive on that. Also reduce or redirect the water flow.

That is all I can think of at this time hope this helps!

What color is the cloudiness? And if you look really closely is it a haze or a particulate cloudiness? I assume you have a fish only tank with no live rock, live sand, etc, but can you tell us some more about your set up?

its a 50g set up with fish only, four pieces of rock, initial use of live sand but thats long since been dead since i drained the tank for about a month last year.

I'm thinking its an algae bloom but my biggest concern is if the algaefix will wreak havoc with the coppersafe thats in the tank already. A mandarin goby would be torn to shreds by whats in the tank as well, I do want one but he will go in my reef tank once i get the copepod population more established.

The current tank inhabitants are a small volitans, a small clown trigger and a small niger trigger. all are juveniles. The clown has started munching on some of the algae on the glass today that we noticed as well, which reinforces my thoughts that its an algae bloom. When you look at the water through the back sunlight you can see clouds moving around, almost like a billowing smoke effect. I have the lights off for a few days in the tank already to help quell a case of ich, hoping that might cut back on whatevers causing the cloudiness. Honestly the water is looking kinda green from certain lights.

Just a question, if your lighting is weak will it  cause an algae bloom due to lower light intensity. I don't know if that is possible. As the brighter sun coming through the window can cause that. It is just a thought.

first and foremost if the entire tank doesnt have ich than there is no point in treating the entire tank setup a 10 gallon hospital tank using the water from your aquarium that way you can continue running proper filtration( carbon). with that said, you should not combine medicines such as coppersafe and algaefix there could be very adverse reactions to the biotope of your tank. there is a filter media called biochem zorb that works great at polishing and clearing water, however there is a new product that you dont have to replace....ever. its called purigen its a much fancier higher end version of the biochem zorb and i personally think it works better.  you might also try using a finer micron filter pad to be able to capture any smaller particulates such as algae blooms.
