| Well, today was a nice day outside, so I thought I'd finally clean put my old 10 gallon. I know I'm gonna make it a planted tank for sure, but I'm not sure what to put in it, what kind of setup (origin), what kind of plants, and what equipment. Well...I can figure out what kind of equipment to use, so I'm not too focused on that this whole topic. Now to start off, what kind of tank should I make this? I mean in origin. Here are my possible choices: 1. asian (densly planted and somewhat calm water) 2. Oriental stream (some current with some dwarf hair grass covering the bottom, along with driftwood and java fern) 3. amazon tank (very densley planted with driftwood and tea-stained water, along with a little current current) 4. Any suggestions? What do you think I should go with? Any suggestions? Post away!

you're going to have issues with number 3. Tea-stained water is not optimal for growing plants, it interferes with the amount of light they can get. You'll find that the staining that is natural in the amazon is a seasonal thing, that's why it is a breeding stimulator. It doesn't hang around all the time like it would in a tank. So if you go with that option, I'd either forget planning on the water color, or realize you'll be limited in plants.
As a personal opinion, between amazon and asian, I tend to enjoy the amazon. That's just me.

| Ok, I guess I won't make the water tea-stained for that option setup. I really can't decide which one I want to go with. In an asian tank, I could probably get some sparkling gouramis, and some other fish, or I could get some Dario dario. If I got an amazon tank, I could get a some cool species of tetras or other amazon fish. Then if I got an oriental tank, I could have a carpet of dwarf hair grass, driftwood and rocks. In an oriental tank, I could get red crystal shrimp, japonica amano shrimp or/and cherry shrimp along with some golden white clouds, or something else. It so hard to decide! I'm open to any other ideas too, so please share your thoughts and opinions.

| I'd do an amazon theme. If you can keep up the proper water conditions cardinal tetras and some ottos would be perfect.

wait. I have bad news. I might not even be able to re-do this tank at all! We have a family trip planned for this summer to go to india. I haven't even found someone who can properly take care of my 20 gallon yet. I talking ot my family abou tit, but their arguement isn't that bad of a deal to discuss. WHat should I do? If I can re-do this tank, then I can resume the amin point of this topic. I personally am a little worried asbout vacationing and my aquariums. I want to put something in there for sure, but I might not be able to put fish....remeber....might not.

| Yeah, If I do that, I'll probably have red crystal shrimp and some kind of asian fish. I'll probably plant it with a carpet of dwarf hair grass. I'm not really sure if I should do it though. It's a really great opportunity, but who's going to properley maintain it when I'm vacationing? I'll think about it. Eventually, maybe I can put a small snake in there, like a male kenyan sand boa. I really want to make it an aquarium too. I'll have to discuss this, and think about it.

I would also say try the #2. Sounds like a neat, low maintenance aquarium. Also how long are you going to be gone? I was gone for a few weeks last summer and my school of neon tetras didn't get any food during that time but they were surprisingly quite healthy when I got back.
I have read that some people have had nightmare experiences with those 'vacation food' blocks that release the food over a period of time.

| I'd definitely do an Asian theme, so you could put in some female bettas! What fish would you put in there?

LilMissBetta (3/16/2010) I'd definitely do an Asian theme, so you could put in some female bettas! What fish would you put in there? I'm not sure. I was thinking maybe a species only tank of Dario dario or sparkling gouramis....if I CAN make it an aquarium.
