I decided to start growing Red Mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) again and so far after a month, they are looking pretty good.  Two are in totally freshwater and the other six are in brackish water tanks with a S.G. ranging from 1.004 to 1.010.  Does anyone else keep mangroves?  SGN

Okay, I've never posted a photo here before here we go:
I apologize for the water mark it is a file photo. These mangroves have grown about an inch in a month and only receive indirect window lighting. SGN

How big do they get? Can the be trimmed to stay smaller, like fully terrestrial plants?

Do they flower because it looks like the bud of a flower starting. I would like to see the whole tank if possible.

They are very slow growing but can easily get a couple of feet in about 3 years. In nature, they get huge. I have seen some in Florida at least 50-60 feet high. But like all plants, the growth rate and time really depends on the conditions. They are very beautiful plants although I find it amazing how many people think they are ugly.
Yes, with extreme care, they can be trimmed. They have to be tediously pruned, not like one would do on a Ficus tree for example.
I have all but one of mine growing in natural lighting and they are not in display tanks so photos are not very aesthetically pleasing but I’ll post some soon. They are an excellent brackish water plant and easy to keep. I’ll keep you guys updated as mine grow. SGN

Stephen, have you considered growing mangrove bonsai? If you decide to grow a (or many) mangrove bonsai trees, I think it would be very neat, and more suitable for an aquarium with some inhabitants such as mud skippers, fiddler crabs, and some kinds of fish. The actual hobby of Bonsai might be a little more than taking care of any plant, but in my opinion, it's definitley something to try. Good luck!
