I really like arowanas, and in fact, they're my favorite fish! I thought I'd open this topic to discuss them.

So, what are your opinion on them. I love them because they're so elegant when they swim, and they're really like small dragons. No wonder they're also called dragon fish! I really want to own one and keep it in an outdoor heated pond since it doesn't get that cold where I live.

Oh, and does anyone know what the deal about them being illegal in some parts of the country is?

SA/silver aros are completely legal in all parts of the USA i believe. others are not... except maybe african and/or jardinis.

these are great fish, but silvers are so farmed and inbred that theyve become VERY weak fish... drop-eye is much more common among them than in other species, and this among other problems explain why they are so cheap and easy to get.

if i had the time/space for a RTG aro or a group of them, i would have some...

but theyre not exactly my favorite fish. i would prefer some fish over any aro species... but these "some" are much harder to keep.

Silvers are illegal? I know that liveaquaria, which is a great place for fish, sells them, and I think my lfs might have one, or it might just be another species.

I just now found this link on the whole issue: http://ezinearticles.com/?Illegal-Arowana-Trade-Implications:--Lifting-the-Ban-on-Responsibility&id=415212

I really didn't know that ALL asian arowanas were illegal. Jardinis on the other hand are not from asia, so they wouldnt be illegal, or at least I haven't heard of them being illegal.

Couldn't live aquaria be in big trouble for selling them?

....Actually I don't think silvers are illegal. Arowanas from Asia are said to be illegal due to their very low populations in the wild. Silvers are from south america, so both liveaquaria and my lfs are not in any violation of the law.

i never said they were illegal. silvers are south american, only asian aros are illegal in the US from my understanding, and most in the trade are bred captive.

Oh, sorry. I accidenatlly misread what you said about silvers. I thought you said they were ILLEGAL. Agin, sorry about that.

Oh, and I looked up prices on silvers, and you're right, they are pretty cheap. You can get one for $3 more than a black orchid betta from liveaquaria.com. They're only $19.00! I really like the red arowanas, and platinums are pretty cool too.

platinjum silvers are easily one of the most expensive fw fish... not cheap by any means.

meh, maybe... im not really into spending tons of money on fish anymore... maybe on a rare L# if i stumbled across one, but id have to have a lot of cash laying around. im too low on cash to spend much on fish, so im just using it on parties / amusement parks / hanging out with friends...

i need more money
