I've recently taken an interest in goldfish, and one that I thik is truly unique is the bubble eye. Sometimes I fell like their cheeks are about to burst right in front of me! It's pretty funny to watch some of them swim around. I think they're adorable because of thier balloon like cheeks! I would really like to get one or two once I get the space, time and money. I was a litle curious about them. What is in those huge balloon like cheeks? Isn't it some kind of fluid? What are your opinions on these fish?

its a fluid. but the sacs can easily be popped or damaged from sharp objects in the tank or maybe even rough tank mates. these fish have poor vision and would have a tough time competing for food so slow and docile tank mates are good.

a 29 gallon long would be minimum for these guys. be sure to have great filtration (either double power or two) and good water changes cause they are messy. i know that with goldfish people generally tend to use larger gravel, i guess so those wide gaping eat-everything-in-sight mouths dont take in a piece of gravel.

i think that bubble-eyes are alright. theyre kind of awkward ina goofy way. i prefer orandas and butterfly tails. its funny, since we were talking about fancies on the pond topic ive been brainstorming a tank of them too  i would want to do a nice planted tank with goldies, mostly because im too stubborn to believe that golfish are the plant destroyers that most people say they are ;P

29 gal: 2 mollies, >15 guppy fry, >10 molly fry, 1 farlowella cat
20 gal:  2 pearl gouramis,  7 cherry barbs, 1 female crowntail betta, 6 female guppies, 1 albino bristlenose pleco, 1 bumblebee catfish
10 gal: 2 black kuhli loaches, 11 male guppies
10 gal: >15 guppy fry, 1 rubberlip pleco, 1 nerite snail
5 gal: 1 celestial pearl danio, 1 male 1 female guppy, 1 nerite snail
2.5 gal: 1 male crowntail betta

Pond: some sunfish, some flagfish
Container Pond (20g): least killies

Yeah, I've heard bubble eyes are a little harder to keep than all the other varieties of fancy gold fish. The only pond they would be safe in would be an indoor pond. I like he calico bubble eyes the most. The majority of the ones you see in pet stores are just orange, and sometimes black. I'd rather hav e a ryukind or an oranda too. Those really look like little puppies! Wathcing bubble eyes, I feel like if I kept one, the hardest thing about keeping them would be keeping thier eye sacs in tact!

yeah i like calicos as well, but mainly just black and white goldfish.

im sure the sacs are pretty durable. just think of it this way: they can survive shipping and im assuming most of them come from asia, just a guess, but thats pretty far. and they can also handle the conditions in pet stores, the only place ive seen bubble-eyes is at this one chain and there were about 15 of the fish in a tank with some small plecos. pretty tough to me.

yeah. As long as there are no aggressive species of fish of sharp objects, they'd probably be safe. I kinda feel sorry for them sometimes because they're a captive variety that has eye sacs that sometimes prevent it from seeing things. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't reallly mind it, but if I were one of them, I'd be pretty annoyed that I havee two giant eye sac blocking my view whenever I turn my head.

i like shubunkins better than bubble-eye fish..they're more active. bubble-eyes aren't as cute as lionheads. I love the lumpy sacs on their faces, and the not-so-huge body. they're really hard to find in my area though. I only found them one time

50 gallon heavily planted bowfront
Albino Cory Catfish: Magikarp
Bristol Shubunkin: Zane
Ryukin: Tweak
Calico Fantail: Circe
2 assorted cories
Rubber lipped pleco- Munchlax

tall 25 gallon being set up

non-fish pets:
13 year old Rottweiler: Buggsy
9 year old English yellow labrador: Morgan
2 hermit crabs: Phoebe(foe-bee) and Holden
10 year old thoroughbred gelding: Scottie
I'm so busy lately with new(ish) tanks, school, and work..
