Does anyone know if on a 55 gal tank you should use 2 24 " hid/t-5 fixtures or would 1 48" fixture work better.  Wonder if with 48" fixture the middle brace would create a problem.

the middle brace would not create a problem. I'd say just go for whichever one is cheaper is they have the same total wattage.
also, please be sure to post in the right section next time; this topic should probably be in the everything but livestock section

Hello Shannonsmom.  I have 55 gallon tanks with both types of lights.  Frankly, I prefer the longer 48 inch light.  I use the same strength bulbs, but the longer light will provide a little more light.  I have quite a few plants in the tanks and they do well in both.  I'd recommend lights in the 6,500 K (Kelvin) range.  If you use those in your tanks, your plants and fish should do very well no matter what type of strip light you have.

The single nominal 48" T5HO (it's actually around 46") is better than using two of the nomial 24: lamps. They're also less expensive, and you can usually find the longer T5's at any good lighting store. There's no real need to buy the "special" T5 lamps from fish places.
