Is a Minibow 5 filter gentle enough for a betta, or should i just get a sponge filter? On the side of the tank's box it said it would be fine for bettas, but just to make sure...

| I had a 2.5 gallon minibow for awhile and my betta didn't seem bothered in the least with the filter. I realize the 5 gallon filter may be larger, however.

Any kind of filter i've tried has almost sucked up my betta.
I haven't tried a sponge filter yet.

I don't know how effective it is but I have seen where some aquarists attach a sponge (from a sponge filter) or other filter media outside the intake tube of a power filter to slow it down. Yeah, that may slow the uptake to your power filter, but it will also cause a lot of extra wear-and-tear on the moving parts. The impeller blades are meant to spin freely without any resistance. Just like you wouldn't run tomato juice or cooking oil through the filter and expect it to work for very long. The sponge media connected to a regular air pump is an excellent idea, or even a small box filter (Lee makes them.) You can buy a small 3-way bleeding valve to weaken the airflow if it's too strong.
