I was trying to return fish at Petco that died on me (I suspect their livestock is not healthy). First, I went to the register and waited there for 5 minutes. Then the dude told me to go to the Aquatic section. Then I waited there for another five minutes. They told me I had to go back to the register to hand a lady (who was apparently a "fish specialist") the reciept. After waiting for ANOTHER five minutes the lady took my reciept and toll me I had to go back to the Aquatic section to get my water tested. After waiting for ten minutes for them to look for their testing kits and get my water, they told me it was fine, and I had to go back in line for yet ANOTHER five minutes just to return my fish and get a refund. All in all, I waited half and hour just to return my fish and get a refund.
And sorry to any Petco associate who's reading this, but your service is not the best at all!

| It can also depend on the particular store. The Petco by where I live has very friendly employees and there is always someone to help with fish. The Petsmart where I live it almost seems like I am wasting their time asking for fish. Just my opinion here but I think Petsmart has a lot of fish variety to choose from but Petco on the other hand always seems to have nice betta fish.

I agree about the bettas. I have a brand new blue halfmoon from PetCo as of two days ago, and the veiltails arent bad either. I never bother to try and return fish, so I found this post interesting, and I also second that Petsmart has the best selection of fish. However, my PetCo service is sort of under standard- I actually netted a fish for the guy one time!
Avid fishkeeper.
29 Gallon:-3 Angelfish, 2 Silver dollars, 1 Rainbow shark, 1 danio, von rio tetra, albino cherry barb, one HUGE pleco
1 betta setup
Ten Gallon Goldfish:-Ryukin as big as my hand , one 3 inch Ranchu

Expecting a terrarium and marine aquarium soon!

The Petco in the city where I live is not bad. They do a great job taking care of their fish, and frequently have pretty decent sales. Managed to net some flame's one time for about $4 each. regular price is about $8. And they were healthy.
Really good selection of bettas two, who are kept in clean little betta cups. There is a pet depot here, and while it's better than Wal-Mart, it's quality of fish and standard of care are not as great as Petco.
Still Petco does not hold a light to the Tropical Fish Emporium! Sometimes I just like to go there to browse even if I have no intention of buying anything. They frequently have fish that are just not available at any petstore here IE: my chain link loaches -- Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki. Or is it Botia sidthimunki? I know they changed it.
Returning dead fish can be a hastle especially when working with LFS "pet experts."
I bought a delta tail female betta two months ago from petco and their fish expert was small talking me up at the register and asked what kind of tank I was putting her in. So I told her I have a planted 15 gallon with three chain link loaches and a pearl gourami.
She immediately flipped out and was talking about how this little female betta will kill everything and that bettas are not community fish etc.
After a brief exchange of opinions, we agreed to disagree, I gave her my money, went home and now have a peaceful community tank with schooling loaches, a constantly hungry gourami and a female betta that goes crazy anytime she sees my male halfmoon betta. No one has died yet.....

Some are good and some are not so good. It depends on who is running the store.

Im soooo lucky. The petco in my area has an employee who is studing to be like a marine biologist or something. The guy knows the scientific name of all the nameless bunchplants. He is sweet.
My tanks: 20 gallon 5 guppies, 5 platies, 1 cave tetras, 6 black neons. 20 gallon tall: 4 dwarf puffers, 2 bettas, 3 glofish, 2 kisser gourami, 3 cories, 2 honey gold gourami, 1 oto, 1 clown loach. 20 gallon tall:1 cichalid, 5 bluegill.

I would agree with it depends on the store and I would take it further and say it can depend on the "specialist" you are talking to. Where I live there are a couple Petcos and Petsmarts. One Petco is telling people bettas will kill anything that moves, and you can keep freshwater crabs in a community aquarium. While the next Petco's associates seem to know what they are doing. One of the Petsmarts has two specialists that know something about fish and one associate that would probably be better in a different department. It would be nice for new fish keepers if the stores took more care to screen their employees. Its just sad to hear an uneducated "specialist" telling a new fish keeper the wrong information which will result in disaster and the novice keeper giving up on fish. Yet at the same time I feel kinda like a jerk when I interrupt the associate to explain to the other customer they are quite wrong.
~When I hear Bay-tah, I think there must be something rudimentary and unfinished about my fish...
But, I know my bettas are definitely the final and complete version.~

Yep. I specifically go to a local Petco for all pet food just to look at the new bettas they seem to get frequently. Don't know why but this particular Petco store always seems to have very nice female bettas.
The local Petsmart has quite a lot more selection of tropical fish but the bettas always appear sickly with very few colors to choose from.
