Will a pair of gold or blue gouramis (I believe it's trichogaster trichopterus) work in my 55 gallon tank? I have 9 gold barbs, 5 peppered cories, 2 upside-downs, a bristle nose, and an oto already and I am wondering the gouramis would be too aggressive. Temperature is 76, ammonia & nitrites are 0, and nitrates are 10. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
- 55 gallon: 6 Cherry Barbs, 5 Diamond Tetra, 1 Pearl Gourami, 1 Bristlenose Pleco, and 1 Upside-Down Catfish.
- Planning to add: 12 Cherry Barbs
-
- 20 gallon: 7 Multi Shell Dwelling Cichlids
-
- 10 gallon: 3 Celestial Pearls Danios (Soon To Be 12) and lots of Cherry Shrimp.
-
- 2.5 gallon: 15-20 Yellow Cherry Shrimp and a variety of Snails.

These gouramis don'eally work well in pairs. It is best to keep only one, or 6+. I would reccomend 1 blue gourami. They are actually more peaceful and can change color too. Have you thought of a pearl gourami? They're awesome fish and a bit more peaceful than blu gouramis.

I love gouramis but my water has a pH of 8.0. If that is okay I will definitely try a pearl gourami. If not is there another gourami that would do better in my water. Also, can I only get one pearl gourami or more? Thank alot!!!

Trichogaster are very adaptable to a wide range of water parameters. A pearl gourami should be safe and have no problems with a ph of 8.0, however they do thier best (natural condition) in a bit more acidic water (6.5-7.5) You can achieve this by adding some driftwood. I prefer malasian driftwood becuase it does not seem to grow slime like mopani driftwood does, and releases less tannins, so it isn't necessary to cure it for very long. You want some tannins, but not a whole lot. Unfortunatley, the only kinds of gouramis that still do great in a ph of 8.0, which are commonly available in the pet trade are Trichogaster gouramis

Okay great, but how many can I get (schools, pairs, or singles)? And what about breeding? Would they breed in my water or would I have to lower the pH? I also have a waterfall filter and I read that gouramis don't like a lot of water current. The other half of my tank does not too much current, but I don't know if that is okay. I also know that they like floating plants and I just bought some duckweed and a plant that I believe is Anacharis (Egeria densa). Is there another plant that they would prefer or am I okay with what I got? Thanks alot and ANY more information would be extremely helpful.

With what you have right now, I would get only one first. You'd probably have to lower the ph for breeding conditions using driftwood. The thing with breeding most Trichogaster gouramis is that the water level should be halved (isn't really necessary) for them to breed, whcih wouldn't be a good idea at all, considering all the other fish. About the water current, yes they do prefer calm water. They will tolerate slight current too, but make sure there is plenty of room for them which doesn't have much current. They will be fine with the plants what you have, and if you can get some, try getting some water sprite rooted into the gravel. They like tall plants too.

| I have been breeding Pearl gourmais for 9 years along with showing them. I usually keep a pair in my 75 gallong tank. Then when they are ready for breeding I move them to a 10 gallon tank. Usually in about 2 wks we have eggs. I place the parents back in the 75 gallon tank and then raise the babies in the ten gallon tank. i do not mess with the water at all and so far i have produced some nice award winning fish. At this time i have 4 pearls in my 55 gallon tank and all are doing well.

Thanks for the information. I will try to get some drift wood soon and see how that does. So, to sum everything up, 1 Pearl Gourami, some water sprite in the gravel, and some drift wood to lower to pH a little. Thanks again!!!
