I want to start a tank of about 1.5 gallons with a LED light and air driven filter.  My first stocking thought was some of the little hermit crabs that i always see at the store and in saltwater tanks.  Any thoughts and more importantly help with salt types and other things would be appreciated.  It is still in the planning phase and I'm a complete noob when it comes to salt water so i really need help.

My tanks: 20 gallon 5 guppies, 5 platies, 1 cave tetras, 6 black neons. 20 gallon tall: 4 dwarf puffers, 2 bettas, 3 glofish, 2 kisser gourami, 3 cories, 2 honey gold gourami, 1 oto, 1 clown loach.  20 gallon tall:1 cichalid, 5 bluegill.

if it is your first saltwater tank, i would honestly get a much larger one to start off with. saltwater aquariums that small are incredibly hard to maintain. the larger the tank, the more stable it would be. start with at least 30 gallons. ive seen one of the new Fluval Spec tanks set up as saltwater. it is about 1.5 gallons. it had mushrooms and some sexy shrimp in it. it was cool but i know the person who set it up is extremely experienced.

10 gallon-  Planted Asian biotope with CPD's, sparkling gouramis, and a breeding pair of Betta albimarginata.

I was planning on no fish, no corals, maybe some live rock and brine shrimp(c'mon everyone loved sea monkeys growing up) with some little hermit crabs.  Just something that would look cool and get me started.  If i kept like 3 hemit crabs and some live rock do u think that a 50% water change weekly would be enough?

i would honestly not try it. 10 gallons absolute minimum. its just going to be sooo unstable. and salinity changes so quickly in that size tank that you would have to top it off four or five times per day. it would be much more work than you think. if youre a beginner, i would wait on the very nano saltwater tanks. theyre hard even for experienced people.

The mistake most 'beginer saltwater' people make is the ole "I'll start small and learn from there". The bigger the tank the more stable and the EASIER it is. Starting small is basically saying "I am gonna start with the absolute most pain in the butt situation and work my way to the easier way".

Seriously I would not even attempt a SW tank smaller than 29 gallons. PERIOD.

Ok.  Thanx guys.  It makes a lot of sense now.  I think for the time being i will stick with a small sea monkey tank.  They are still preaty cool even at the age of 15.  Pus i can feed them to my other fish.

I don't want to burst any ones bubbles but You can maintain a 1 gallon tank if you want to. It take a lot of hard work to keep the water conditions pristine but it can be done. My buddy Steve had two dwarf seahorses in a 5 gallon tank and had them for about 2 years. He has water at the ready and does a small daily water change. I think he changes about 1 gallon every day. I'm positive that if you keep on top of it you can do it.

im definitely not saying it cant be done, because it can. i was just recommending not to start with a really small aquarium as a first saltwater tank. ive seen some awesome pico saltwater tanks but they were all by experienced people who knew what they were doing. just starting off in saltwater, a 29 gallon tank would be the minimum i would ever recommend for anyone.

My starter tank was a 20 gallon rectangle, with in the year I was up to a 50 gallon and was going bigger as soon as I could. So that said my suggestion would be for a starter tank I would go as big as I could afford, I mean within a budget because starting a salt tank is very costly with all the equipment you need. I also think that after the tank is established they are easier to maintain. So with all the right tools a beginner can start and maintain a smaller tank. If he/she is willing to do the research and taking the time(because rushing things is almost destine for failure). Also I apologize If I offended any one.
