Anone got the straight skinny on a good heater? All I read, it sounds like a crap shoot. I don't mind paying for a good heater if it is worth it, but I hate paying good money for a $3.00 heater that lasts 3 weeks.
Any suggestions will be highly appreciated. I am setting up a 75 gallon fresh water community tank.
Thanks in advance

I use hydor theo (I forget which is the brand and which is the line of products) and they've never given me reason to complain. Fluval heaters are good but expensive. Where do you shop? At a specialty store you should get more of a selection and the employees should be able to help you out too.

PetSmart is the major pet store here. There are a few small private owned, but they can't compete with price. I am looking on line too, but like I mentioned, it's a crap shoot. PetSmart hires mainly young people, most of whom only know about fish and equipment that they own and use. Most of the time I already know more than them just from reading info from the net. A few that I have talked to didn't even know that some Marineland heaters have a lifetime warranty.
Thanks for the advice

Well sometimes you get what you pay for. Small stores cost more but I can GAURANTEE that you will get much better service and possibly quality. Generally anything comes form a large company or a specialized high quality company have no downfalls. A good heater will likely cost you somewhere in the high 20s or low 30s, more for expensive models.

Great, Thanks
I am going to look at the smaller stores tomorrow and talk to the owners.
That should give me a good feel for what they get back as no good heaters.

Not that it has to be expensive it's just that these are generally your price ranges for a solid heater, hope this helps.

Thanks to all for the advice.
I am going to a locally owned pet store and ask the owners what is the least returned heater and trouble free heaters that they recommend. I have a friend that runs 2 heaters plugged into a power strip, plugged into a controller and he says it works great. And again he says he has had problems with almost all brands of heaters. Right now he is using Odyssea.

Does anyone know exactly what is going on with the Marineland recall on the Stealth Pro heaters?  Do they actually know for certain that only the 100W and higher wattage heaters are the only ones affected?  I have a bunch of these and they've never been the most reliable heaters, but to replace them all would be a giant pain.

They had some problems with the higher watt heater rapturing if they over heated. A couple of people had side of their aquarium blown out
