I'm sorry about that experience at a petstore. lol i have had many issues like that at the very petstore i work at i felt so bad for all the fish there that i just had to and now i am still cleaning up after people who send home incapatible fish or fish to a tank that is two small i deny people alot of fish because they never have any intentions to put it in a appropriate sized aquarium. also before working there i was asking questions i knew the answer to and the question was just baffling and while i was there i have come to learn the ones in those depts claim they know alot but don't. you always will know if you get someone who knows what they are doing and not. also another thing employees sell gold fish and say they can live in a bowl all their life... i say no thats to mean for a goldfish they NEED a tank due to the amount of waste they produce, i tell people i wont inless you get a minimum of a 10 gal tank w/filter its a slow painful death for a goldfish. another thing i am surprised at how many people think gold fish can eat tropical flakes it burns their insides they don't have stomachs so that is also why they require their own food. there is honestly so much to type but all in all me and the dept manager are the two who people specifically come to see because we are the only two that have givin correct info and made sure it went smoothly for them. another thing that people at my work say is its fine to use just plain tap water for fish -.- NO! wrong there. so yea i would just say only deal with employees who own tanks themselves talk to them ask them questions about their setup how often do their fish get sick (weird ? but if they say often then you know they dont know much) other thing i get mad about is when a common plec gets sent home to a 10 gal tank... there are the otto catfish that are better off in a small 10 gal. i'm not all that surprised about that experience at your lfs when i buy my fish i go to strictly aquarium shops and sadly only two in the city i live in are actually worth going to all the others have sick fish hungry looking fish messy store and tanks etc. my personal opinion the ones who take up keeping fish as a hobby and have a passion for the hobby should be in those departments as those are the ones who give the right info and actually make customers happy because everything is going so well for them and before all that happend was dieing fish. i apologize daily at work for 1 employee in particular cause he always sells the wrong fish to a setup or tetra's who should be in a minimum school of 4 to be happy doesnt do so just one than they come back saying its aggressive biting other fish my first question is how many of this kind do you have?. or there is the rainbow sharks and their relatives he sells them not saying how territorial they can be which causes people to lose intrest in coming in. ive gone to petsmart only to see every tank sick the employees not knowing anything about the dept their in. my work is somewhat like that but the ones who get complaints i and the manager have to talk to them about it and explain why these fish cant fish explain why tetras need to be in groups of 4 or more etc. ive had bad experiences where i work myself before i got the job but part of gettign that job was to make that area better and make sure everyone is getting the right info and fish for their setup. (another random common thing is employees sell cichlids to tetra tanks) <-worst idea ever!

20 gallon Tropical lightly planted.

40 gallon tropical planted.

55 gallon brackish planted.

110 tropical planted.

The chain pet store (I won't mention any names is particular) have the most miserable people working in there. It's hard to ask questions or get any help. It's not that they don't help, it's just that they don't seem like they want to.

Also, there are constantly dead fish in the tanks. Just one or two here and there but I've never gone in to find every single tank death-free. How hard is it to scoop them out and flush them? I don't want to see dead fish in there, or the potential fish that I'm buying pecking away at the corpse. If it died recently and no one had noticed that's not fine but not as bad either; however, when I see little skeletons at the back of the tank I'm greatly disgusted.

Not only that but all of the tags on the tanks have a minimum tank requirement that are grossly understated. Cories really shouldn't be kept in 5 gallons. Especially if you're keeping a school of them. And if you can't have five, you shouldn't have one.

Their Bettas are also in little cups, which up until a few months ago I thought was standard procedure; however, another local pet store puts them in Nano display tanks (which is smart because people are more likely to walk in and impulsively buy one this way) or in tanks with tetras, ottos, catfish, platies, guppies etc. There are no dead fish and the Bettas fins look great. Also, when I was trying to decide between two male Bettas my Betta (Klaus) was in a tank with sunburst platies and there was another Betta in the tank next to his. They could see each other through the glass and continued to flare their gills which made me much more inclined to buy one of them instead of the clamp-finned motionless ones in the cups from the other store. Even when the other store had Half-moon Bettas, which I really wanted. I went for the plain Bettas because they seemed much healthier.

I've always hated walking through the fish section at pet stores ever since the day as a child that I accidentally stepped on a fish who had jumped out of the net while being bagged and no one bothered to pick him up and put him back in the tank.

been at this fish thing for 50+yrs;seen it all in every kind of store!!!!!!!! good and bad no matter where you go.i still go to all the stores mostly to look and talk.if and when i do see something i want i will go back another day to see if it still looks good and see if any dead fish pop up in the tank, only then(if things still look good)will i buy.certain fish i will only buy from certain places(like my mixed group of cardinals/neons,approx 250 in my 55gal)because i KNOW the cardinals are from a breeder and not wild caught.other places i've been to so many times i can ask to catch my own if i see someone new and if anyone knows you at the store it works good.i actually don't need any fish right now cause my 55gal has approx 450 fish/shrimp in it and the 20gal has a 7inch blue lobster(over 4yrs old),10 neons, and 15guppies so untill i can set up my40gal again i'm good.remember the more you visit a store and the more the people see you the better service you will get,but you STILL will have to deal with the GOOD and the BAD!!!!!!!!!
