I started out with 5 fish 3 Red Wag Platy, 2 Variable platy. The female Variable had 2 babies then she died. The Red Wags' started having babies. Aprox 11 of them in one batch. After about a month I introduced 2 Bumble Bee Platy. All was going quite well. I then put 3 fancy guppies into the mix, along with 10 neon Tetras. Within two days of the guppies and Tetras entering the tank, two of the guppies died and one of the baby Variables. I did my usual 25% water change and all seemed to be fine. This morning I took a fish count and check and find that 2 tetras have disappeared and the other baby Variable. I also see that the Red Wags have added more babies. Should I remove all the Red Wag babies? Is my tank over populated? I believe that a tank my size can support 22 slender bodied fish or 13 large bodied fish. Assistance is needed before I loose more fish.
Thanks,
First Mate

| Bettacrazy's question is a good one; testing water is very important, especially when rasing fry. I generally try to separate fry from their parents, and other adult fish, until they grow out a bit. Do you have floating plants. Guppies can be predatory. Even if they can't eat platy fry, they can injure and kill them. Floating plants can help fry to hide and survive if a "grow out" tank is not an option. Hornwort is a good choice. There are others, but that's the one whose name I can remember right now. As far as stocking level; what kind of filter are you using? How old is the tank? As Bettacrazy asked; is it completely cycled? The mix of platies and neons is not ideal. Platies like harder water, while neons prefer softer. Is it planted? If so, that helps. Your stocking level "seems" ok, but once they're all grown, (if they survive), there's not a big margin there.
135 gallon Lake Malawi tank, (electric yellows)120 gallon (clown Loaches and strays) 60 gallon Planted, (tetras, cories, otos) 50 gallon brackish, (mollies, violet goby) 29 gallon brackish, (GSP) 7.9 gallon Fluval Flora, (betta)

The tetras and the livebearers is fine. I've kept them together before (just remember to acclamate the tetras SLOWLY).
It might be from three causes:
1) Not introduced properly. This is the biggest problem when you get new fish. You need to acclamate them properly. Your local fish store's water is different from your water, as in pH, gH, kH, temperature, nitrates, nitrites, etc. If you just plop them in there, they're obviously not going to go well and will die from stress.
2 ) Bad water quality. This might happen when a) your tank isn't cycled, or b)you have introduced too many fish at the same time, thus overloading the bioload. Perhaps both. As bettacrazy and jsherm mentioned, it might be best to check your water qualities. Also, what do you use when you change the water? Any conditioners?
3) Stress from fishes inside the tank. This seems a little less likely, however it might be good to observe your fish. Observing them for at least half an hour will give you an idea of their personality. Neon tetras can be hassled by other fish because of their size and some livebearers have a reputation for being bullies. Checking in on your fish's behavior might help.
These seem like the three most likely causes. Give us any updates when you can!

I just wouldn't have got livebearers because if it is not overcrowded now it will be later.

13 zebra danios (adult)
2 harlequin rasboras
2 assassin snails
2 spotted danios
20 gallon
2 white cloud minnows
4 zebra danios (fry)
6 gallon
? snails
2.5 gallon: 3-5 unknown fry
bucket: zebra danio fry
