I just bought a 20 long aquarium with the light strip but no glass aquarium cover. can I add the lighting without a glass cover? I know I am going to have to have one at some point because there will be marbled hatchetfish.

| If it is just for a very brief period, maybe. But it could be unsafe in the long run as water can get up into the electrical strip light. Are you waiting to buy a cover or do you just not want one on the tank? With the hatchetfish, definitely. They are 'jumpers'.

Most of my tanks do not have covers, but they have either pendant lights (LEDs) or fluorescent strips that are on "legs" to raise them a few inches above the top of the tank.

well, I won't add plants for about a month or so so the lighting can wait altogethor. I just decided that I am going to probably take the whole summer to get supplies, fully aquascape, setup, and add fish.
